1485703 2022-04-20 23:46:00 Anyone with the downlow on why the ferries are so fully booked? Is it coz of Covid or?

I remember years ago you almost always used to be able to book pretty much next day. Was going to go up north for a week but everything is booked out for the next few weeks on both services.

1485704 2022-04-21 00:17:00 Almost back to normal now, haven't you noticed the airplanes flying overhead!.

Opening up borders mentioned many months ago, especially Aussie.

Yes, many moons ago you could drive up and get a ticket and go onboard a ferry. No sweat, but since those good old days, they have let in 4 million tourists, so go figure.

It looks as tho we will have to live with Covid in the community now, just like the flu.

Good luck with your booking tho, NZers' should come first in my opinion.

Yeah, 30+ years ago we use to do a day trip on the ferries for a pittance. Think it was $25.00 each for a return trip. The only condition was you turned up on the day and if it wasn't full (which it never was if you avoided public holidays) then you're good to go.

1485706 2022-04-21 02:23:00 Just had my flu jab today :)

SWMBO and I wanted to take the car across last Sept/Oct. No problem going North-South but couldn't get back till 8 weeks later. Pretty darned poor and shows lack of planning in the ship replacement program. Must be costing the top of the South Island businesses a poultice!

1485707 2022-04-21 06:28:00 There was an article a few weeks ago saying they were reducing sailings due to a significant issue with covid among the crews.
Might also be some maintenance taking a vessel out of service... or just cost cutting without all those tourists to fill out the booking numbers.

From a global warming perspective, passenger ships are among the worse of the lot for greenhouse gasses per head, so at some point carbon related issues will also have to hit the number of passages and prices.

How do you fathom that?

It's a ship, therefore it has to use fathoms or it'll be out of it's depth with any other scale of numbers (Regardless of nautical orange cones.)

But how many Fathoms of Greenhouse Gasses do we need before having to install more Nautical Orange Cones?

They would have to be pretty tall in order to be seen?

1485712 2022-04-22 00:50:00 Yes kenji those liners' are 7 decks high and they have passenger loads up to and probably over 5,000 polluting bodies on board.

Wheres Greta when we need her!.

One thing I did learn on the ferries, was to sit right in the middle of the ferry, as I was always being told I looked "green", pis!ed me off a treat.
