740652 2009-01-20 23:42:00 Hi!
A little while ago, I tried to update my BIOS from the original (getting on for 5 years old) version . I didn't have the BIOS recovery CD thing as the PC was a prebuilt from MESH and so I did it by downloading drivers, renaming files etc .

I believe I did it properly but as it happens, the update failed after wiping the old BIOS and it is not possible to restore the old one - I have tried all sorts of technical things, clearing CMOS - the lot and as there is no response at all, I've been advised to replace the BIOS .
So, where is a good place to get one? I have seen a UK site that can replace or repair the chips but would rather use an NZ one . The MB is a socket 754 with an Athlon3200+ which I'd rather keep .

Also, if the absolute worst happens and I have to replace the MB, would a new one be a simple plug and play? I have never built a PC from scratch and so Motherboards are new to me and I really want to be able to just turn it on, fire it up and access my RAID 0 drives with all the wedding photos on!

Thank you very much for any advice!

740654 2009-01-20 23:56:00 Where in NZ are you first off? If you have to replace the motherboard then it would be better to upgrade the whole system. If I've read this correctly the bios is now completely wiped?

740655 2009-01-21 00:03:00 Get the BIOS update (dlsvr04.asus.com) unzip it rename it to whatever, then burn it to cd.

Then put it in the cd, since it supports crashfree bios

Get the manual (dlsvr04.asus.com)

To see what file name to change it to, before you burn it to cd

740656 2009-01-21 00:09:00 Hi Gary, thanks for your reply - I'm in Katikati B.O.P.
Yes , it seems after comparing my situation with others in various BIOS download forums that the BIOS is completely wiped and proper dead.

I agree with you regarding replacing the board, the whole PC was pretty high-end when it was new (bought it for EQ) but now the socket 754 is a bit out of date and so really I would be upgrading the CPU too - which would be an ideal situation if I wasn't so 'fiscally challenged'.
So a repaired BIOS is my best bet if available unless I can get a cheap 2nd Hand PC with a RAID MB (I'm trawling trademe continually!)

edit: Thanks Speedy, you posted while I was replying. Not sure if I have tried that already - I'll give it a try anyway

740657 2009-01-21 00:10:00 It CAN be fixed, if you do the above

You need a cd writer tho, and read the manual first. To see what to change the file name to

740658 2009-01-21 01:14:00 I had another go using a CD but to no avail. I don't even get as far as the screen showing the bad BIOS checksum which most of the failed BIOS upgrades at least manage - my screen stays completely black and I even tried a different monitor - it was that symptom that led me to think it was a goner.

The CD drive lights up for just a second or two when the disc goes in but there's no real action. Perhaps I'm just best off replacing the board when I get some cash, assuming a new one is plug and play?

By the way - thanks very much for trying to help the advice was spot on, from what I have read, mine is quite an unusual case in not getting to a POST screen or the Bad Checksum message.
Asus did say that if I was upgrading from the very earliest version of the BIOS without the MB support CD then I was to use the least stable floppy disc format and rename method and hope for the best which I originally did. I have seen a couple of other messages on boards with my MB and the same problem so it's just an unfortunate bit of bad luck I guess.

740659 2009-01-21 01:23:00 All mobos are plug and play. Only thing is these mobos are pretty scarce now.

So maybe hard to find. And I would be careful on getting 2nd hand ones. You dont know how good or bad it is

And if you buy a completely different mobo, you'll have to replace, the CPU and maybe the ram as well

You did just burn the renamed rom to the cd then try didnt you?? You dont need anything else on the cd

740660 2009-01-21 01:34:00 This sounds like your prob (vip.asus.com) ? Speedy Gonzales (78)
740661 2009-01-21 02:08:00 Yes, his prob is pretty much the same as mine. When I tried to mend it using the floppy, I had to put a couple of things on it but using the CD, I just put the renamed (K8VSEDX.rom) onto the a CD and popped it in. MrCross (14546)
