740543 2009-01-20 08:20:00 My laptop has just begun to have screen problems. When the screen is open normally, it shows either black or a random pattern (like a paint blob on a spinning wheel). If it is closed partially, the screen reverts to normal. It happens at the same point of closure, so it may be a connection problem. It is just usable at the moment since you can still see the screen to operate it.

Any ideas on what may be wrong and whether it is an easy thing to fix? It is a Compaq Presario, about 3 years old.

Thanks in advance.

740546 2009-01-20 09:23:00 Can you connect it to an external monitor to check if its the laptop screen or not?

Thanks

740547 2009-01-20 19:10:00 It is the laptop screen. As stated, it becomes normal if it is closed to a certain point. If I open or close it a little about this point, it becomes normal or blank. Thus it appears to be a connection problem as the lid is opened. user (1404)
740548 2009-01-20 19:24:00 Well, if you are brave enough, it is possible to get inside the lid to the lcd screen. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to identify the loose connection and fix.
It does sound fixable, however I think it best to just take to a technician who will have a better change at fixing it for you.

740549 2009-01-21 22:26:00 Just an update on the problem for those interested. It appears to be a broken wire in the cable from the graphics board to the screen. The technician fixing it has one with the same problem. It may not be possible to repair the wire broken since they are so thin. It is due to a design fault not allowing the cable enough stretch when the laptop is opened.

Thanks for the suggestions offered.
