But, the "neighbour" would know that someone had intruded...if he/she knew his/her stuff...

741182 2009-01-27 10:19:00 How do we know it isn't someone who only uses 0.05% of their monthly allowance, coz all they use is email, and is making their other 99.95% available to others?

What if I only use my car 1 day each month? Does that make it OK to steal?

741183 2009-01-27 10:22:00 I'd like to find out who that "neighbour" and get him to join this thread....

Then I'd like to see if you still think its "right" paul.

1) The SSID has "Hotspot" in it somewhere, along with the business name
2) There are nearby signs around the business / uni / premises indicating so
3) A "splash" screen which tells you you're logged in to a free hotspot and your stuff can / will be monitored or logged
4) A frame down the bottom of all browser windows displaying Ads to help cover the cost of running a free hotspot
5) A Login screen requiring a username / password / prepay card number

Now, I could also argue that its actually easier to make a wireless network more secure, especially protecting from your own regular users. I could argue that speed is mostly wasted on a cabled LAN, but Im in a good mood tonight so we wont go there ;)

Either way, while its nice to be able to do it, its both ethically / morally & legally wrong to do-so. Still, end of the day its the OPs choice, not mine.

When I was at a friends place a short while ago I noticed their neighbor had unencrypted & unrestricted WiFi. Apparently it'd just gone in a few weeks ago. Wasnt difficult to go for a quick walk up and down the street to figure it was the house one-down, across the road with the new Wireless. Helped them secure their network, they were happy for me to use it for emails etc when I was passing by, and made myself $50 in the process of doing so. Only took 15 minutes to help the middle-aged couple :) They turned out to be quite nice people!

Just curious as to how you knew which house it was, what gave it away?

Would have been even kinder of you if you had done it as a public service rather than take money from them.

741187 2009-01-27 19:27:00 When you stood outside their house, the signal strength was highest, plus later I found it was in the bedroom window which you could also see.

I would have, but they insisted they pay me for my time. I figured "Why not?" ;) I never actually asked them for anything, and told them initially I didnt want payment. It was just a nice little bonus.
