544502 2007-04-27 05:13:00 I love most spiders as long as i know exactly where they are (out of sight, out of mind) but ..... I HATE daddy long legs!!!! besides the fact that they are the most poisonous spider in the world even though their fangs are to little to bite a human being (absolute urban myth crap) ........... and besides the fact that they like to eat human spittle when we sleep with our mouths wide open (so my son happily told me just to freak me the hell out):( but mostly because they are ugly as hell. The little jumpy ones are so damn cute . I have done search after search but still have not been able to find one spider that completely freaked me out ... about 10 years ago i went into a box we had kept in the garage to ....... (I forget) anyway ......... there was this spider ... and I swear its the truth ... it was the size of my hand from middle to end of legs, was light brown and sort of furry looking, not skinny as in a daddy long legs but not fat as in a tarantula???? Possibly an Avondale spider??? In Hamilton??? Screamed the damn city down, without a lie.:stare: never-u-mind (6500)
544503 2007-04-27 05:20:00 It might have been a tarantula; there are lots of species of tarantula. Google will help. But you're not allowed to import them. :( Graham L (2)

I found one like that at home a while back. Lifted up a pice of old carpet that was lying outside and there it was inside the folds. I too wonder if it was an Avondale, but I thought they were a bit skinnier ....

[edit] ... although this would seem to point to it being the beastie:

544505 2007-04-27 05:55:00 " In South Australia this species is quite common, and people encourage them to live in their houses to keep the pest insect population down."

... see, I'm not so mad ....

544506 2007-04-27 05:55:00 Avondale spiders:
... they live in large colonies.
... Mature spiders with legs outstretched can measure up to 200 mm across (8”)

However, they appear to be good mothers :illogical

Think I saw a single Avondale spider in my garden once; the thought they live in groups did not comfort me. :xmouth:

544507 2007-04-27 05:56:00 Actually my mother has pet spiders in her house and she cannot bear the thought of them being hurt. Jen (38)
544508 2007-04-27 12:50:00 Some of you folks haven't experienced spiders.

I came across an Avondale once when I lived in Massey... he was so big I struggled to flush him down the outdoor drain with my hosepipe on full speed.

When I was in South Africa I had a big bad fellow on the ceiling once - dunno what variety he was, but when I whacked him to the ground he made an audible thump when he hit the ground. He was more like a rodent than an anacrophid.

Then there was this ***** monster beast in my bathroom once... I sprayed half a can of Doom insect reppellant on her... a few minutes later she let loose her evil spawn of baby hell-bitches - they were all over the entire bathroom walls and floor. Hundreds of them.

*shudders*

544509 2007-04-27 13:46:00 We once came back from the summer holiday to find the house full of hundreds of spiderlings. We think an egg sac or three must have come in with the christmas tree, and hatched while we were away. Was certainly interesting walking through the door into loads of web everywhere! Erayd (23)
