740781 2009-01-21 21:11:00 CHange the graphics card to Gigabyte or ASUS.
Bump the PSU up to 750w.
Other than that I'll go away and drool over the specs now........

740782 2009-01-22 21:32:00 as for freeview you'll be fine. My E6750 @ 2.66 can software decode TV3 at about 60 -70% cpu and the old AMD 5600+ managed fairly well too.

Most new Nvidia cards support purevideo hd which can do the decoding work and reduce cpu load to around 10% or less, providing you have a suitable codec. There are major threads on freeview here and on geekzone if you get to that stage.

740783 2009-01-28 02:14:00 Thanks again for your help guys. Think we are getting there!. I'm 100% set on keyboard, mouse, PSU, monitor and case ( i think ) - either a lian li or an antec 900 . Still reviewing dual core or quad core chipsets and need some further help here as well as what video card to go with. Found lots of articles saying an e8500 or 8600 versus quad for gaming then realised they were written back in July/ August 2008. Now finding articles saying quad core are more future proof and gaming is / will be written to take advantage of them. I plan on gaming a fair bit now hence help as well with video card.I'll also be editing video but just HD home movies etc and playing with photoshop. I wont be rendering or encrypting anything.

So is there now a leaning based on available tech etc that still says go dual core? I dont plan on overclocking etc in the interim. Just want a solid and stable machine. Can you recommend CPU and Mobo combination for either. Want to go Intel for now thanks.

Also plan to spend around $400 to $650 ish tops on a vid card. What would be best for the system and useage I am looking for. Could someone please name a couple etc they know so I can review online. Thanks again. Think we are just about there...Finally..given I like xp and not vista, would xp 64 run the system well and give me best results or would I be better off installing vista. I plan to upgrade CPU and mobo in around 3 years

Thanks again.

740785 2009-01-28 03:30:00 Quad core if you're going to do ALOT of multitasking and run programs that use all four cores, or dual core for general stuff.

Quad cores might be good for gaming soon as some games are starting to take advantage of 4 cores.

I reckon an E8400 will be good for a dual, and a Q6600 or a Q9550 for a quad.

Mobo I would recommend the P5Q series, Pro if you're wanting to go crossfire soon.

4870 would have to be my fav.

You'd be better off running vista I reckon, but XP will be fine.

Get W7 when it comes out though.

64bit is good, less issues with it these days.

740786 2009-01-28 07:21:00 From what I've been able to gather:

AVOID Windows XP 64 bit like the plague...

Get either 32 bit XP, or 32/64 bit Vista.

Q9650 would be nice if you can afford it though!!!:):D

Oh and make sure you get a good brand psu 750/850 wattage and get a modular one as well to power your new rig.-(Corsair,Enermax).By getting a big watt. psu you will be able to use it again for future upgrades and if you were to cross fire or sli later on you would need it to be able to power two graphic cards.

740789 2009-01-30 08:01:00 Think this is it. Once again, thanks for the lookover and let me know of any obvious issues. Will be used for net, new games/gaming, camcorder stuff and ripping the odd dvd/cd. I'll also be using photoshop adhoc as well to play with raw/jpeg but not major stuff. I've gone for dual core given I dont plan to require lots of multitasking or indeed encoding of videos etc. I also plan on playing around with a little overclocking but not hugely..

Do I need the following ?

THERMALRIGHT ULTRA-120 EXTREME INTEL LGA775 COOLER 120MM FAN

ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 Channel PCI Express 2.0 - Whats onboard sound like?

Creative Inspire M2600 Speaker System 2.1

Finally, whats a decent case - not bothered about side panel etc as you wont really see it against the wall. Have space for a larger case but something thats quiet and plenty of room, easy to fit out. It could look like a coffin. Its in a room that only I use so cant show it off..

Thankyou again. I look forward to comments so I can frighten the visa card to the tune of around $3700 :groan::groan:

740790 2009-01-30 08:08:00 If the onboard sound on the mobo is 8 channel, it should be good enough.

Altho whats the point in getting a Xonar, if youre only getting 2:1 speakers?
