740736 2009-01-21 04:09:00 Don't understand why it doesn't assign a letter. The options when right click are all inactive (grey out). The same applies to format.

Format it in the case (connect it to a spare ide connector whatever it is), first then put it back

It may make a difference

Oh just saw the link. Does it only have USB on it?

Its not plugged into a hub is it?? If it is, plug it into a USB port, and connect the power to it. If you havent yet. That could be why you cant format it

740737 2009-01-21 19:42:00 Hey, SM,

Just out of interest, one of the benefits of a portable external HDD is to access this from many computers, where I may not have the freedom to carry disks of drivers. Like I may be at friends/families places, hobbies / clubs, conference, meeting rooms, internet cafe, while I am travelling.

Is it that some of these drives requires a disk for drivers before one can use them? Seems like an issue.

:)

The drive has the software on it, as soon as you plug it in, it should bring up the installer. SO DONT FORMAT IT

Edit - Not sure about the software on the drive now, I've found the CD

740738 2009-01-22 04:03:00 The software comes on a CD. I will try to format it in office tomorrow and see how it goes. Will keep you all posted. Thank you everyone for your advice. Taurus (9579)
740739 2009-01-22 21:27:00 There was actually encryption enabled. That's the reason why it requires the installation of the software. Encryption was removed with the Maxtor Manager after installation and the harddisk was formatted. Now it's back to what I wanted. Just plug and play. Thank you everyone.:thanks Taurus (9579)
