740726 2009-01-20 23:44:00 I have this Maxtor 1-Touch 4 Mini 160GB USBu Drive.

reviews.cnet.com

To access the USB drive, I need to install a software to access the drive. Is there any way to access the drive without having to install the software? For example, if I were to use it in the office, I can't simply plug into the USB port and use it. I will need to install the software provided on a CD.

I want to be able to plug and use it straight away. Is there any solution around it?

740727 2009-01-20 23:47:00 You should be able to just access it in my computer, try formatting it as NTFS and plugging it in again Blam (54)
740728 2009-01-20 23:55:00 It "Should" just plug in and can be used like any other USB storage device - the only time you may need the software is if the data is encrypted and requires the software for un-encryption - or to use the back up options. wainuitech (129)

I tried it on my office system using XP Pro. Under Win Explorer, it doesn't show the drive. Went to Admin Tools, Disk Management, it shows the drive. There was no drive letter attached. On right click, all the options were shaded light grey. I was not able to change the drive letter. On installing the software provided, it works. I do not want the software to be installed so that I can use it on any computer.

I have a WD My Book, It's just plug and play.

Open up my computer and go to help and about ... it should tel you there.
Or right click my computer and choose properties.

Can you use disk mgmt and right click and hit new partition ... after that it formats and assigns a letter.

Did it give you an option to format / select new partition?? If it doesnt show in my computer, it has to be formatted first, before it appears.

Which is why it doesnt give you a letter (it wont till you format it)

740732 2009-01-21 02:29:00 I have seen issues with these, a few of our staff have them. Some older PC's have USB1 only and dont provide a strong enough current to spin the drive up, if you hear a clicking, that is the reason, you need to plug both USB connections along with the data connection to the drive,

As for accessing the drive, you will initially need to run the software for the drivers, after the drive is setup, you can just use windows explorer

740733 2009-01-21 03:06:00 Hey, SM,

Just out of interest, one of the benefits of a portable external HDD is to access this from many computers, where I may not have the freedom to carry disks of drivers. Like I may be at friends/families places, hobbies / clubs, conference, meeting rooms, internet cafe, while I am travelling.

Is it that some of these drives requires a disk for drivers before one can use them? Seems like an issue.

Don't understand why it doesn't assign a letter. The options when right click are all inactive (grey out). The same applies to format.

Nomad - My office systems are new (4 months old) and have the latest service pack installed. You may be right that some drivers need to be installed. But it installs a whole lot of other software that I do not want. I just want to access the drive to retrieve some files only. That means I need to carry the driver together with the drive wherever I go. Guess I will hvae to live with it.

740735 2009-01-21 04:07:00 I've got a 500GB version of one of those drives.
When you first plug it in, it automagically installs the backup software etc.

I did what blam6 suggested and just reformatted it, so it acts like a regular plug-n-play USB drive.

So copy off any existing data, and reformat it, and see if that solves your problem.
