742341 2009-01-27 02:55:00 I have been without windows update for several weeks now and have searched microsofts website and many other forums and blogs without sucess. when i run windows update i get several error messages, when i try to install updates i sometimges get the error "80240016" windows is currently installing other updates or when i try to check for updates "80072EFD" with unkown error. there are some variations in the error messages but these are the most common. i have tried to download several updates from the microsoft update and support sites but have been unable to do so. a right click "save target as" is denied with "cannot connect to server" and clicking on download or page links will result in me getting a page from google saying the following file/page is not located on their servers. sometimes i get the google english homepage however the adressbar states that i am still in microsofts support site. given the unusual errors when on the web i am thinking i may have a virus that my antivirus software has not got a definition for or the virus has disabled my antivirus from scanning for it.

I'm using Vista SP1 with (I know what someone will say about my AV) norton 360 2.0.

P.S for speedy and blam6 thanks for your help and time, I got rid of W32 but it took a lot of work and time but it was a lot of individual file scanning that led me to the source. this is a more detailed write up of my previous post that i abandond because i was away for a week and doubted ayone would be monitoring it

Thanks for any help and support, it'such appreciated:clap

742342 2009-01-27 04:27:00 If its thats bad, I would format it. Then reinstall Vista.

And dont install any P2P programs on it

742343 2009-01-27 05:02:00 I was thinking about doing that when they release SP2 or getting windows 7 whatever is first but i read in pc word and on microsofts website that sp2 is not expected untill april. what do you think about the beta sp2 or windows 7? is it worth the bugs and chaos of a beta untill the release the stable version? can you download the SP1 as an image? just wondering as it might be a good idea for future re-installs

thanks anyway your always a help!

uuh you wouldnt by any chance know anything about adobe flash would you? just wondering because I got it as a present and am still new to it

742344 2009-01-27 05:12:00 SP1 for what?? Vista??

Its available, but its big. x86 SP1 is 434 mb the x64 bit is 726 mb

The beta of Win7 is pretty good. It was fine on the old AMD system here (1.6, 1.25 gb ram). But, I wouldnt install it since it'll run out

I would wait for the final

Nope, never used flash

742345 2009-01-27 05:23:00 Wouldn't be to concerned about Windows 7 beta - its still in testing and while it is an improvement over Vista the Beta expires on August 1, 2009 - so if theres no other betas ( which MS say there wont be) available, or the dead line expires then the system will stop working.

Dont know if you have tried this - but click on teh start Orb, in the search box type in sfc /scannow let it scan your system for any faults - reboot and try updates again. ( tried this several times and it fixed Updates on Vista)

If that doesn't work - click start/ type in msconfig click it in the results to open - under the Services Tab - scroll down, make sure Windows update is ticked - while in msconfig, look on the startup tab - locate windows defender - untick it - reboot, and try again with the updates.

If you think the Norton 360 may be causing the problems - uninstall it and retry the updates.

Download Hijackthis (www.trendsecure.com) run and save a scan - copy/paste back the log - lets see if its got any noticeable bugs.

742347 2009-01-27 05:49:00 oh well, ill probably do the reinstall sometime next week but i was just wondering how you format the instalation partition in vista 86x i know how to do it in 98 with the old 1.4mb floppys but i never learnt it in vista. probably a tool to create boot disks in vista but i havnt found one yet

In the BIOS set the boot order to 1. CD 2.HD

To reinstall just boot off the Vista CD/DVD and format the partition you want to use.

I think its part of a trojan - go here (http://www.virustotal.com/) navigate to the file in the directory location as shown, locate it upload it to that site and tell it to scan - see if it registers as a trojan/ bug what ever , if it doe run theprograms listed at the end of this and see if it removes it.

From my sig, downlaod and install / Run malwarebytes, Spyware terminator, run in full scan mode and remove every thing they find. HOPEFULLY Norton wont throw a hissy fit about other antispyware programs running. Sometimes Nortons doesn't like to play nice.
