742162 2009-01-26 09:29:00 I have a work server that is backed up every day, around 6GB of data. For the back-up i am using a Seagate tape drive, it does the job but it is quite slow. Is there anything to stop me from backing up to a USB pen drive? I have run the back-up programme OK and all the files appear on the pen drive OK. If i did have issues would there be a problem restoring from USB? borax (7078)

USB pen drives every so often fail completely without notice. Only when you need it do you find out about it.

Funny that:p

742165 2009-01-26 19:26:00 Tapes fail, too. The old fashioned grandfather, father son applies to all backup media types. I can see nothing wrong with using USB drives as long as you cycle through at least three sets. And, like tapes, you could buy new ones periodically to replace them. Do month-end ones on the tape as well?? linw (53)
742166 2009-01-26 20:03:00 I have a few clients who do backups onto USB pen drives.
Fast & reliable - never had a backup fail yet.

But as stated by others DON'T just use the same one every day!
The price for a USB pen drive is not a lot compared to losing all your data :D

My clients have 7 pen drives labeled as Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 1, Friday 2 & Monthly.

742167 2009-01-26 20:13:00 USB drives have limited write cycles too.
If you are going to do that then use a real 2.5" or 3.5" external hard drive.
With a Western Digital drive in it.

742168 2009-01-26 21:25:00 I've been using a flash drive now for a while - it is 8gb and carries every single letter, photograph (including scanned ones from the 19th century) database etc - in fact everything I have ever done on a computer. Mind you I am a private individual not into films or music or games.
I also back up to a spare hard drive - I think this is one of the best ways. And yes I do know it has risks (eg fire in the computer or home). Both backups are done automatically every day.
With my flash drive I can back up to one of my laptops also.
For safetys sake I also have DVDs stored off site and do extra ones occasionally.
Flash drives costs are going down fast. Good thing.

Doesnt hurt to have a second copy just in case old murphy turns up!:crying

I know murphy, actually anyone who regularly works on computers probably knows him

742170 2009-01-27 04:49:00 I'd be more inclined to use a USB external Hard-drive myself.

Especially if it's a work server.

742171 2009-01-27 06:10:00 It is a bit 'horses for courses'.
I have had three "pen " drives fail in the last two years.
I still have a Zip drive, used rarely, but it has not failed in eight years.
The USB duplicate disk drive suggestion costs money but is likely to be more reliable.
I back up documents [into folders] on to a C D, as I finish them.
