741823 2009-01-24 21:37:00 Can anyone tell me the difference between Category 5E cable and Category 6 cable. These cables are used for connecting the computer to the wall socket for high speed internet. My setup [several years old] uses Cat 5E cable. Now I want to use a longer cable and can only find Cat 6 cable in DSE catalogue. IanS (924)

741825 2009-01-24 21:50:00 Cat5e is 100MBps, Cat6 is 1000Mbps.

Don't buy from DSE - very overpriced - try http://ascent.co.nz :)

741826 2009-01-24 22:13:00 Can one use cat 6 to phone jacks for both computer & phone use? Using the same outlets? PJ Poppa John (284)

Cat5e is quite happy running gigabit too. Cat6 is required if you want to run a 10 gigabit network, but realistically nobody does this outside a datacentre. If you're wiring a house, go with cat6 for future proofing. Anything else, go with cat5e - it's cheaper.

741828 2009-01-25 00:04:00 Many thanks for info. Re overpricing, have a look at http://computerstore.co.nz. The courier charge builds the cost up a bit but still better than DSE.
