546655 2007-05-03 10:10:00 Hi there

Im after a solution to this problem...

A hotel employs a Night Porter who has tasks take him to all corners of the building, so he cant always see/hear if thers anyone at the front door...

As their technician, Ive been given the task of coming up with a system that will alert the Night Porter, someone has pressed or activated the Night Call switch/sensor. The Porter does some vacuuming as well.

Ive thought about the Repco remote Bell Push - Alarm, but that may not work over the distance & floors involved. A earpiece for the Porter (ala McDonalds PA system) would be great as long as the Front Door unit is like a Push Switch in operation or sensor activated switch.

Ideas please...

Thanks

John in Mosgiel.

546656 2007-05-03 10:20:00 Might need to check range but my wife is Deaf and she has a pager that vibrates to different types of sensors, eg baby sensor & door bell. The name of the model is "silent alarm" made in UK but there are other brands available doing the same sort of thing. sam m (517)
546657 2007-05-03 10:45:00 I'm afraid you're on a hiding to nothing if the Night Porter is a male.
Everybody knows that a male can only concentrate on one thing at a time.
From personal experience, if I'm vacuuming, then I'm vacuuming and that's what I'm doing. No amount of paging or whatever will distract me.
I think the first thing that you/your client should do is hire a woman.
Of course, keeping a woman on the job she supposed to be doing and not doing things she's not supposed to be doing is another story.......

I can barely spell the word . . .

No of course not . The cleaning lady does that - why have a dog and bark yourself .
I was speaking figuratively and relating it to the original post .

546660 2007-05-04 04:02:00 Wire the doorbell button across the fire alarm test switch. You should hear that anywhere in the building. There might be some minor side effects, but you can't have everything. It might teach the stingy owners to hire cleaners to clean, and night porters to sleep except wwhen needed.

I suppose you really want serious suggestions. :D

How about this. A pair of PRS "UHF CB" tranceivers wouldn't cost much. The porter can carry one. Have the other set up with a suitable sound signal plugged into its microphone input. It's legal to use channels 22 and 23 for "telemetry", so it should'nt bother anyone, expecially late at night. (Just make sure that the sets are capable of using those chaannels ... some Australian sourced ones have thos channels locked out.

546661 2007-05-04 06:10:00 set it up so a pager is activated when the bell is pushed or whatever......if he has it in his pocket it'll vibrate and give a noise that should alert him drcspy (146)
