546161 2007-05-02 00:18:00 I thought this was funny.
Husband crashed the ute a few weeks ago, which may or may not have had something to do with it.

Anyway he bought diesel tax last week at which the start reading was 237xxx.
Yesterday he got a warrant and as he was reading the form (It passed) he noticed mileage was listed as 338xxx.
He checked, yep, it says 338xxx.

He panics thinking he wrote the wrong start mileage down when he got the diesel tax. I said, no my car had always had a higher mileage than his ute (291xxx), he rung the Post Office, whoc actually have records of all the mileage frome when he first got it.
According to her it had jumped 100,000.
What to do? She said he'd have to have a new speedo as this was obviously faulty, which would mean getting more diesel tax anyway because it would be reading 000000 then.

I looked it up on the net - how to.
So he wound it back top 238xxx.
He's quite horrified at how easy it was.

I suspect the thing had probably been wound before anyway, the numbers never lined up accurately and his mileage is out slightly anyway.
On the 8Km check on the way into town I get exactly 8km, he gets 8.8km.

546162 2007-05-02 01:46:00 Is he happy to be paying 10% extra diesel tax? :(
(I suppose the 10% improvement in fuel consumption is an offset, :) and the greater tire mileage is a bonus too);) The factor of having half the family !0% further from town is a bit of a nuisance though. :(

546163 2007-05-02 03:45:00 He complains all the time about the 10% he gets "ripped off".

Still, better than a sudden jump of 100,000km. Snicker. He's a bit paranoid about it now. Probably crash again because he'll be driving around watching it.

546166 2007-05-02 06:08:00 Take a very close look at your speedo reading and I will bet you will find that the numbers do not lign up exactly even in a new car. Many, many years ago I was shown by an auto electrician how to "manually" re-set the speedo by disengaging the cogs and re-setting the mileage without the numbers being out of alignment (tweak of the trade you might say). No my lips are sealed!
I was also shown in more recent times the ease of turning the speedo setting back using a common tool-and yes the numbers can be lined up as though it had never been tampered with. Again my lips are sealed-but it does involve a little bit of tinkering afterwards. The Japanese (or Importers) are simply amateurs when it comes to this sort of naughtiness so it's no wonder they get bagged for it. The most common thing in the bad old days was simply to disconnect the speedo cable from the speedo and hope the car in front was within the legal limits!
Regards Gordon.
P.S. no PM's please I have my squeaky clean record to consider-such as it is!

546167 2007-05-02 06:45:00 Get an electronic speedo. pcuser42 (130)
546168 2007-05-02 06:55:00 Many . . . if not most newer cars have the mileage in the ECM . . where it is stored and tested against an E-Cell . . . to make sure there is no way to modify the readings . . at all!

There is no way to spool back an odo on most electronic cars/trucks in the US .

I have seen people try to buy used odos for the newer cars just to put them in and have the odo now report the old mileage that was in the car in the first place . It's no use to try .

The ECMs and the odo's are now even establishing parity with each other . . like the high-end radios and dvd/cd-players that have a hand shake with the PCM to make sure that they have not been replaced or tampered with .

If the ECM detects a different digital signature, they scramble the unit and render it useless .

In which case he can get another vehicle in the event your partner is still alive. Possibly an eight wheel means of transport. A pair of roller skates and no tax to pay. Skates do not use diesel and last time I saw a pair there were no hubmeters fitted or required.
