545779 2007-04-30 22:50:00 I've had lots of tech junk break on me lately, so getting picky... I just want a plain ole DVD player, mutliregion of course. I've heard bad things about Phillips, Sony, etc... can anyone recommend a good basic reliable brand? Are Dick Smith any good? Thanks. Gavin GJ (12199)
545780 2007-04-30 23:00:00 You gets what you pay for nowdays if you buy a cheap dvd player sooner or later its gonna give up its life and annoy you until you fix it.

You are probably better off buying a more expensive dvd player that will perform better and last longer.

I myself have learnt that if you buy cheap tech gear it quickly craps out on you, so i have bought myself some dearer equipment lately and the results are much better performance and reliability.

545781 2007-04-30 23:02:00 Sony stuff is great if you are prepared to pay big money for it, philips are starting to fall by the wayside and aren't as reliable as they were years ago. Hitech (9024)
545782 2007-04-30 23:13:00 I've had me 'el cheapo' Mustek DVD player from DSE for a few years and it does me fine. Mind you I don't watch DVD's every day.

But hey, the price is right

545784 2007-05-01 23:48:00 We have a Sony plain old DVD player - basic spec and it it very good. We also bought a Philips combined unit with VHS.
I am not as impressed with the Philips - once you realise that it has some very strange menu commands and the remote keys are apt to stay stuck in the down position, then it isn't too bad.
I'm satisfied with it. Dick Smith I like because they change virtually anything not satisfactory (we had to change the first Philips I bought from them).

545785 2007-05-02 00:06:00 Yup, I had a Phillips multizone (well still have) but its on loan .

I thought it would play any DVD (but it didnt), with ones I burned myself .

BUT, then I found that this is common, depending on what DVD burner you use to burn whatever DVD .

They're not all compatible with multizone players (or any DVD player) .

Then I brought a Panasonic 5 cd/dvd stereo (which was cheaper than the Phillips) .

I was surprised (it didnt say) that it was also multizone, and it also played the DVD's I burned on this ASUS burner . Which was a bonus .

I used to have an AIWA as well . Didnt last long . After so long, the cd (it wasnt DVD) failed . It wouldnt read anything . So, that was the end of AIWA for me .

Havent had a Sony stereo before so cant comment on whether Sony is good or not . But I do have 2 Sony TV's .

Isn't AIWA just rebadged Sony gear? I'm sure AIWA went broke a few years back and Sony brought them out.

545787 2007-05-02 01:19:00 Sony had been the major shareholder of Aiwa for a while before the merger. PaulD (232)
545788 2007-05-02 05:23:00 Philips - stuck down buttons and weird non-intuitive interfaces to program the video tape players and the tv's, I know, I've been dealing with this type of problem for years. Mum and Dad always buy Philips and I am called in when they have problems, but that said, very good functionally with virtually no big hardware faults, touch wood. zqwerty (97)
