| 546181 | 2007-05-02 09:40:00 | with the digital milage recoders its apparntaly not that hard to crack it. if anything its eaier, no tampering needed, just plugin the laptop. even the ones that stores codes in mulitable places has been hacked. all it does is make its harder for joe blogs to alter the speedo but easier for the professional crooks :( |

| 546183 | 2007-05-03 06:27:00 | So what happens to a speedometer reading if I take all four wheels off the ground and run it reverse gear for a week or three? What would happen to a hubodermeter? All wheels off the ground and running in reverse the speedo would still record your mileage-ditto the hubometer. With no airflow past the radiator I have no doubt the engine would cook within an hour or three unless you had a supply of water running through the engine via a chiller or just running to waste. We used to take water from the river Clyde to test our ships engines. When under heavy load conditions if the river water became too warm even the chiller couldn't cope and testing had to be shut down (pretty low tech in those days). Probably showing my age but you are probably aware of that by now. Regards Gordon. |

Cost goes up with the required accuracy too . It's fairly obvious that the vehicle manufacturers would prefer the speed readings to be "optimistic", so the driver is impressed by the performance . This will shift odometer readings in the same way, so the fuel consumption figures will appear better, too . :D |

Most manufacturers include them in the dashboard to fill a nasty hole that would be there without one . ODOMETERS, however . . . ARE REQUIRED! As they set the limits of manufacturer's responsibility to the owner and Federal authorities as to emissions, sensors and devices involved in the exhaust pipe values . Accuracy of the latter are closely monitored . . . and any manufacturer with inaccurate devices will be cited like Toyota was just recently for 2% differentials from accurate . Some of the newest vehicles compare the GPS evaluation with the odometer and will report as either an ABS service light or an ASC Level-II warning . |

| 546186 | 2007-05-04 05:00:00 | A speedometer is required for any vehicle registered in NZ after Jan 1951, apart from some classes of vehicle which rarely or never go on the public roads (or any roads at all) and travel slowly when they do. ;) I can't find the accuracy requirement, but it's probably be in line with the European standard which "was" -0% to +10% in one reference I found in a quick look. That may have been tightened up since. |
