546478 2007-05-03 08:24:00 I asked Sony this question several weeks ago. They said 2009 before they install digital tuners here in NZ. I suspect the rest will be the same.. These things are just a plug in card so I wonder if it will be an after market item??There is a French company that makes a card that converts MPEG4 transmissions to MPEG2 so that a digital TV can understand them (note: that is for digital terrestrial, not digital satellite). However, as the models in New Zealand don't have any form of digital tuner at all, you would need to import one from Australia or England to get the necessary slot. Then taking into account the different transmission standards, having to work out how to import, the fact the UK digital tuners are only SD anyway so you are going to need a STB for HD really makes it not worth the hassle.

I think it will be a while before you see in built digital tuners as I understand France is currently the only country using MPEG4 for terrestrial transmissions. I think it would be safe to stick with the usual idea that there is always something better around the corner, so in terms of Freeview if you need a new TV now, buy one. If you don't, wait a few more years.

There are some Loewe televisions with digital satellite tuners in them. Maybe someone had been playing with the model I saw in a shop at the end of last year, or the test TVNZ satellite broadcasts were worse than analogue, but the image quality was terrible compared to Bravia's (at least the X series, I would presume the S and V would also do a reasonable job).

By the way, this is all irrelevant to your original question Pato as I imagine you would have to use the supplied STB for Telestra cable. For future proofing, make sure it has HDMI with HDCP compatibility and you should be fine.
