742292 2009-01-26 23:15:00 My partners laptop is a Dell (yeah I know)

Its a C2d 2.2ghz 2Gb ram running xp 32bit

It runs very poorly slow on startup, office tools and others take ages to open with the specs I would have thought it would handle that sort of stuff fine.

She is on a network at work and uses VPN client at home and work, I must admit there is alot of dell bloatware and other things like object dock and snigget and lots of payroll stuff.

She does think it runs faster at work I think at home its always scanning for the network while logging in which takes upto 5 mins to log.

The problem the IT people there have said we aren't allowed to install programs to clean it and they won't or don't have time to see whats wrong.

Is this a common problem when taking laptops off a network that they are useually on?

742293 2009-01-26 23:19:00 The laptop might be configured to look for a network every time it boots up. This could result in unnecessary delays if it is unable to locate a network.

Cheers :)

742294 2009-01-27 01:08:00 You're probably right that it's looking for network resources:
- either a network share
- or a network printer
- etc

You could verify by running something like Process Monitor from Sysinternals, it doesn't require an install, just download and run the exe.

Does the VPN client allow the option of being started before the Windows Login process? Then the network resources will be available by the time the login process has finished.

(The Cisco VPN client software I use has that option).

One: It probably has been infected from her home use.
Two: Bloat - both the Dell startup rubbish and possibly if 2 years old +, WIndows bloat too.

Tell her to get the bossy IT people to sort it if they won't allow her to.

742297 2009-01-27 02:03:00 Allright so I will check the drives maybe dissable some she isn't using

I will have a look at VPN

And I'll get her to talk to her IT again

Thanks all for the help

Before I saw it was 2Gb RAM I was hoping just to Cclean it, disable some start up options and put a large RAM stick in it, but looks like I better not touch it and leave to her "BOSSY" IT people.
