| 741977 | 2009-01-25 20:08:00 | I've been out of the hardware loop for a while, but now I'm building a new system and I need some recommendations for a good PSU. On my last machine I burnt through 3 different ones in less than 5 years, and the last one went out with a puff of smoke and took my RAM with it as well. I really don't want a repeat of that. I'll be running an i7 core with 6GB of ram, 2 HDDs, and an HD4870x2. Many thanks |

| 741978 | 2009-01-25 20:15:00 | What brand were the PSUs you previously bought? | jwil1 (65) | ||

Got a budget? Otherwise you might as well go high end. What were the previous PSU's and what were they trying to power? |

| 741980 | 2009-01-25 20:40:00 | Can't recall what brands the other PSUs were. My current 'rig' is an x800 pro, 3ghz intel, 1gb ram and it's powered by a 350 watt Excel. So yes, it's about bloody time I upgraded. Budget is not important, however I do not want to simply buy the most expensive I can afford because that was the approach I took last time around and it didnt turn out so well. I want a good and reliable PSU that will be able to power a high end machine with extensive usage without crapping out within a year and taking half my computer with it. |

| 741981 | 2009-01-25 20:41:00 | Get a Corsair, Enermax or Silverstone PSU. Spend at least $200 on one - a PSU is the WORST component to skimp on :) Stay away from Excel/Olympic/Hyena crap. |

| 741982 | 2009-01-25 20:45:00 | Excel/Olympic/Hyena crap. Well actually the excel thats powering my current machine came out of the computer I had before it. I got that one in early 2000. :D I do understand that its probably the exception though. I've been looking at a Thermaltake Toughpower (www.einfo.co.nz), heard nothing but good things about it. I'm just wondering if 1200W is too much overkill... |

| 741984 | 2009-01-25 22:25:00 | 1200W is overkill. I reckon you could go by with a 650W at minimum. Go for something 750W or above. Thermaltake Toughpower is good. Add Antec to your good list. See how much their 850W Quattro costs. |

| 741985 | 2009-01-25 22:57:00 | I've had a 750w ToughPower for around 18 months now, nothing wrong with those PSUs at all. Fan is a little louder than the Silverstone and Enermax PSUs, but quality wise I have no complaints. I'd really recommend getting a modular PSU though, I got a really nice silverstone PSu to replace the thermaltake but couldn't be bothered with all the cabling! :p High end PSUs have an awful lot of cabling to contend with. |

It will be more then enough for your single card setup - has a single 60Amp 12V rail which is excellent. It's not modular though. If you are planning to go Crossfire in the future, you would need a bigger PSU. |
