| 742894 | 2009-01-29 02:13:00 | Hi all. I had bought the first version of xbox 360 the day it came out. And finally 2 days ago it gave up and now it comes up with the "Red Ring of Death" (3 red light blinking) issue. Anyway i have been looking up on you tube and there are some videos which show how to fix the problem. Well i am trying to give it a go. Just wondering if anyone did it themselves and has it worked without any more issues? Also where did u guys buy the thermal paste and cleaning stuff for the CPU? Also if you have any good links to any video and helpful material to make it easy, would be awesome. Thanks all. |

Do you know if i need to buy the thermal paste cleaner or can i buy use something in the house? A clean rag works fine. You could maybe look at getting one of these (www.lian-li.com), they're very good. Not overly cheap (www.ascent.co.nz) though. |

Man that almost costs the same as a new xbox 360 :) If this doesnt work i prob wont buy another one. Stuff tat. But do you know after fixing the RROD once, would the RROD keep happening? |

| 742902 | 2009-01-30 01:03:00 | I find IPA (isopropyl alcohol) works really good for loosening up old thermal grease, just dont go nuts with it . Dampen a paper towel and dab the IPA onto the old grease, and work it in, then wipe the old stuff off . give the surface a wipe or 2 to remove any left over IPA and grease mess, being carefull around the outer edge of the chip so you dont mush old grease and IPA all over the circuit board underneath it . and leave it for 10mins or so so the remains can evaporate away . then apply your new grease, use a very small ammount . Spread it over the chip surface with a bit of cardboard or an old plastic bank card . All you really want to do is just cover the chip surface so your looking for a thin smooth coat . All the grease is doing is making sure theres no air gaps between the chip and the base of the heatsink, dont forget to clean up the base of the heat sink as well to remove the old grease . Pop your heatsink back on and your done . |
