| 742816 | 2009-01-28 18:59:00 | I have a wireless router in my home that I used to connect to wirelessly through my laptop without any problems. Now that I've re-installed XP on my laptop, I can connect to an unsecured network but it won't let me connect to my home wireless network because it is secured. When I put in the WEP key for it to connect, it says "waiting for wireless network" like it does with any other network it connects to, except it doesn't connect. Instead, it connects to an unsecured network that I didn't select. Is there anything I can do that will let me connect to my secured home wireless network? | alsoslick (10137) | ||

| 742818 | 2009-01-28 19:38:00 | Yes I installed all the drivers that originally came with the laptop from the Dell website | alsoslick (10137) | ||

| 742821 | 2009-01-28 21:09:00 | When you did the reinstall of XP, did you get all the updates from MS that it needed? Happened to me once and I just downloaded the updates and it fixed it. I would suggest you change WEP to WPA or WPA2 if router and laptop support it. | lakewoodlady (103) | ||
| 742822 | 2009-01-28 21:14:00 | So once you installed all of the Windows Updates it worked for you? | alsoslick (10137) | ||
| 742823 | 2009-01-28 23:36:00 | So once you installed all of the Windows Updates it worked for you? I have a Macbook which I installed Win XP on from the cd (via Bootcamp) and at first it wouldn't, or couldn't access my wireless router with security enabled. So I disabled security on the router and then got all the updates from MS and then re-enabled the security, put in the passcode and it was fine. I know it it a slightly different situation to yours, but maybe worth a go. Cheers LL |

Control Panel>Network Connections>Right Click Wireless>Properties>Wireless Networks tab>Now select your network and click Move Up until it is at the top. Then, double click your network>Go to the Connection Tab>Tick "Connect when this Network is in range" Cheers Blam |

Even when it's not first priority and I click to connect to it, it's not like it gives me an error message saying that it can't connect. It just goes through the motions like it is connecting but it connects to another network instead. It's so confusing. |
