742656 2009-01-28 08:31:00 Daughter (4) has an old computer that I built for her so she could play her Dora and other games

Anyway, she kept complaining (for ages) it was broken, so I decided to have a look.
It would start up all ok, then after about 20 minutes, just shut off. On reboot, the cd-rom drive would attempt to open, then shut, then try to reopen and so on.
Event viewer (win 2k) showed nothing except a whole lot of red X's next to cdrom with the reason "Device\CdRom0, has a bad block". CD player gone bad were my thoughts

Anyway, I just happened to place my hand at the back of the computer and discovered the rear of the computer was abnormally warm. Closer inspection revealed 2 pieces of what looked like almond nut blocking the PSU fan, hence the PSU would overheat and shut down the computer.

Still not sure why event manager would fire out the cd errors though, probably when the cd is attempting to open on bootup

742657 2009-01-28 08:46:00 You could still having a faulty CD device. Does it work OK if copying large files or playing games off CD? Jen (38)
742658 2009-01-28 09:45:00 Yeah its all good now.

This thread was just mainly an observation, and may help someone with the same error ("Device\CdRom0, has a bad block")

742659 2009-01-28 14:10:00 I do so hate it when a 4 year old has better gaming skills than this 79 year old.

What is her PF1 name???

742661 2009-01-28 17:04:00 So are you 70, or 79? Or have you forgotten? :p

She has no PF1 name as of yet. And when she gets one I might forget to tell you

Apologised to her for ignoring her valid complaint for so long?

And then she can apologise for stuffing nuts into it and breaking it.

If she is anything like my 10-year-old niece (who takes after me ) she will be teaching her parents PC stuff in a couple of years. :p
