if i use a new sim card can the phone still be tracked? If in doubt, don't buy. IIRC the phone can be traced through its own electronic ID that is unrelated to the sim card.

Anyway, if you had your phone stolen, how would you feel about somebody buying it and then trying to prevent it being traced?

If it is traced, you lose it, but you retain the right to a fair trial on charges of receiving stolen goods.

But how could someone actually trace a cell phone? How would they know what the electronic ID is? By a serial number? And if they did know the ID, who would trace it? It would surprise me if Telecon or Vodafone has a tracing service.

547321 2007-05-05 22:42:00 How? By the cellphone towers. They'll say which phones are in range of it. pcuser42 (130)

This has nothing to do with it.

The IMIE (International Mobile Equipment Identifier) that every cellphone has means if one is stolen and reported, the IMEI can be blocked, rendering the phone unable to be used on the network. If it was purchased before the block took place it would suddenly stop working? However I am unsure to what extent the NZ networks can apply this.

So what is the phone or fax number or email address of the cellphone  tower so someone can request a trace?

547324 2007-05-06 00:08:00 So silly question i spose but is this number stamped on each individual phone ?
So you can then write it down? or is it found another way? when it is turned on so it gives out a signal?

547325 2007-05-06 00:40:00 I have bought 4 phones off trade me with no problems. Stating that a high percentage are stolen is absolute rubbish. To find your ID code, type in *#06# As stated, this is a unique number for the phone, and can be used to disable it. Peter H (220)
547326 2007-05-06 00:43:00 type in *#06#
Then what? Send?
