So it's up to the police if they PROCEED with your prosection. you WILL be breaking the law if you smack your child. i saw the herald this week on the front page there was a parent being charged for smacking a kid. How did the police find out you ask? A teacher of the kid found out from the kid and called the police.
This is great to see. it will make all new parents think about hitting their kid, even if it's not in public, because their teacher could find out.
I am glad the antismacking bill is going to pass and it will create a safer upbringing for kids.

547260 2007-05-05 04:51:00 Remember that there is a difference between smacking and "beating the living daylights out of". While I don't support parents hitting their kids, I think that this entire debarcle has been a waste of taxpayer's time - diverting attention away from things which are much more important, such as our high dollar, huge government surplus, etc. somebody (208)
547261 2007-05-05 05:02:00 I agree.This law is stupid

While I understand that some parents abuse their children.Other don't

I doubt children will listen to their parents

I doubt the parents will listen to this kind of law as well

:))))))))Youre still here? I figured someone musta bought some cream and you'd gone away :illogical

Anyway, I'm not about to stop smacking my kid as is required (she's lucky if she gets smacked more than once a fortnight anyway, and its only ever one smack on the hand (using my open hand)). And from my understanding, with the amended bill I am able to do that with no worries anyway.

My child is all grown up and moved away.

547264 2007-05-05 05:54:00 Just take a look at any school these days.

Look at how many students can get away with most stuff and all they get is a detention, imposition. Teachers can't do a darn diddly arn thing, pupils know that.

This is what happens when the younger generation know they can get away scot free.

547265 2007-05-05 07:38:00 that new bill is pointless. what is different from it than what was already illegal?
it was a waste of time just like that Auckland stadium and billboard rubbish. Theres allot more important things to deal with than attempting to reinvent the wheel (which obviously NZ cant do) and create laws as useless as a car without an engine. NZ government is still in the stone age IMO :angry

ps. thats sue bratford in my avatar

547266 2007-05-05 09:30:00 I've stayed away from this debate but what the heck - I'm pleased the law will be changed. Parents think they can beat their children. Now they'll think twice.

Most parents today are responsible, a rare light smack for a young child does no harm.

The problems of arrogant sneering youth are rooted in the values of modern society. We no longer respect each other. Why should our kids be any different?

Two generations ago school teachers, policemen, doctors etc were all esteemed members of the community. They were respected. Children learned from their parents to respect their elders, be polite, and to behave.

Cranky old values weren't they! Much better today...........

547268 2007-05-05 21:07:00 Discipline is not why there is kid gangs on streets tagging fences and car parks and overpasses. its the lack of discipline that is turning kids to streets and drugs. it is not discipline that makes children violent or misbehaved. I am not a parent and its along time until I will be. but this law will just increase youth crime as kids think they can get away with everything and allot will come from family's that don't care about them and what if they tried to do something like run off, the parents wont be able to do anything because that would be child abuse. If a child is stronger than a parent and the parent wanted him/her to stop doing something and needed to use more force, would that be child abuse?.
This law and sue Bradford are just trying to ruin what was once a nice country a few years back and has now turned into a political and religious battle between who's right and wrong. they need to get with the facts and act there age. the recent study showing most child abused countries is not from smacking your child(hard or soft) its from kicking and beating your child for no reason. I personally know 2 14/15 year olds at my school who have bruises and scars as there parents beat them regularly one has had a broken arm before. One has run away from home for 2 weeks and slept in a hay barn to hide from his dad, he lived off apples from someones backyard. thats what we have to stop. not parents trying to control there child.
During this smacking bill debate did anyone listen to what children had to say?
I dont think so. Even the people I know who get beaten disagree with this law . they aprove of getting smacked for doing something wrong. But its the beating and fighting that should be gone after which this new bill does but its no difrent that what was allready illegal in the past exept make parents less likely going to smack there child for anything. and there will be other forms of discipline eg getting kicked out of there houses and children will turn to drugs and gangs.
[/rant]
ps. if Sue Bradford is so good at solving violence why don't she go make some bill in iraq and clean that up?. I'm sure GWB will be pleased.
