547156 2007-05-05 00:53:00 We opened a brand new packet of Sun Rice brand medium grain brown rice. It had live weevils in it! Greg (193)

547158 2007-05-05 01:13:00 Active protein-plus rice, strictly for non-vegetarians. Do you have a permit for keeping livestock? Have you registered your weevils and checked their vaccinations are up-to-date? R2x1 (4628)
547159 2007-05-05 01:21:00 A little extra protein is good for you...wanna talk about oatmeal?

Or beer?

Or uncooked broccoli or asparagus?

How about sushi? We call it bait here. The worms wriggle out of the dark "lines" in the fish..but that's just where the vermin live.

547160 2007-05-05 01:26:00 Weevils are common.
Unless you keep stuff in your pantry in containers, you most likely have a colony.

547161 2007-05-05 01:38:00 It does happen from time to time. We have found weevils in 5kg bags of flour, and in wheatbran from "bulk buy" bins.

The Chinese, that very evil unscrupulous empire, has found a new way of adding protein to foods, pet food and gluten, scrap melamine ground up into powder. Apparently it responds to tests for protein in a similar way to real protein.

Numerous pets have died in the US, with reports from hundreds to thousands.

This just one of many reports found by Google:

547162 2007-05-05 02:51:00 In the Royal Navy sail powered ships fresh food was always in short supply. Instead of bread there was "biscuit", baked to be brick hard. Table manners in the wardroom included tapping the biscuit gently on the table. This caused the weevils to leave. The stories don't say what was done with them. Perhaps they were fed to the lower decks in their stew. Perhaps fresh weevils would have been preferable to the meat supplied by the lowest bidders, and "preserved" in brine. Graham L (2)

I am hoping that we are talking about the 'old' navy . . . at least not in the last few years :waughh:

And as for the thread title- Greg should work for a tabloid newspaper with such an ingenuous intro, I was hoping for a story about killer fluffy rice :p

547165 2007-05-05 03:49:00 Since the topic is rice and since I have a cycle race tomorrow morning, does anyone have a good rice risotto recipe, for carbo-loading purposes? johcar (6283)
