546920 2007-05-04 08:29:00 I personally think it's somewhere in between. Those who owns -overly aggressive pitbulls are irresponsible idiots. Their undoings cause their dogs to attack people, and euthanased.

That idiot who owned the pitbull that killed the woman recently had the dog chained up all day. Chaining up a dog deprives them of freedom and is a factor in promoting aggressiveness in dogs.

But by banning them, innocent people would not be victims of pitbull attacks. Although I still don't like the fact the irresponsible owners get away from their crimes with light repercussions compared to what the dog will have to pay - dying.

So what do you think?Well I guess that makes me an irresponsible idiot. My pit X staffy X mongrel (which I seem to have inherited from when my g/f was pregnant with our kid) will be in mid-air at the end of his chain should you be on our property and close enough. Off the property he is a complete pussy. My only concern with him is the neighbours kid (he used to be ok with her, but because her and my kid fight (3 year olds), his sense of protection seems to be kicking in. WE may have to put him down if we can't improve the situation (she doesn't come over often, but we are trying to teach both the neighbours kid and further train the dog). We have also advised the neighbour of what has happened so that she can forewarn when the kid is coming over

Yes, pittys were (and still are bred) to be fighting dogs, yes they pose a threat, but in the end its how well the dog is trained (which brings all responsibility back to the owner).

The courts also need to punish the owners more

And one final word... I do believe pittys are unfairly targetted. If someones Jack Russell mauled a child, I doubt it would make news.

But again, it comes down to how the owner is treating them ... 		Myth (110)

And lets not compare Jack Russels and pitballs, Pitballs make the news because they savage people.Its not all down to how the animal is trained at all. 		Metla (12)

I don't call that ignorance or irresponsibility.

You're doing something to prevent your dog from attacking. That's good.:thumbs:

And indeed, you cannot compare pitbulls with most any other breeds. They were trained to fight, but in the correct hands, they are friendly, sweet companions. Albeit a little mischievous. I remember my pitbull when I was 5......naughty bugger. 		qazwsxokmijn (102)

546928 2007-05-04 09:40:00 The politicians had the opportunity to prevent the importation of dogs like Pitbulls and Rotweilers years ago, but with free market forces rampant and the "hands off" attitude of the government at the time, the opportunity was thrown away.

Now there are so many cross-breeds that defining what is a Pitbull can difficult.

Before the importation of Pitbulls and Rotweilers, the machos all had German Shepherds to swagger around with.

Obviously training will help, but the fighting genes will still be there, and the sort of types who own Pitbulls, in the main couldn't care less about formal training.

I get irritated when people say Jack Russells can be just as viscious, indeed small dogs often bite, but who has heard of anyone being mauled to death by a Jack Russell or Chihuahua?

So on balance, yes get rid of all Pitbulls and Pitbull varients.

Kill any dog that attacks a human what ever breed it is . :D
