742983 2009-01-30 18:27:00 If considering Asus, the chipset changed from NEC as used by Pioneer to MediaTek as used by Liteon. At least 1 Asus drive now is the same internally as a Liteon drive. You can't treat a brand's history as a linear progression. Thanks for this info, I wasn't aware that this was the case. Maybe now I should change my focus to compare between Asus/Liteon vs something like Pioneer.
And thanks to the others for the feedback on Pioneer too. Will check them out more closely

Have been checking the web and there is no performance difference between a SATA and IDE. The only difference is you get rid of that wide IDE cable for a tiny thin SATA one.
:)Exactly. That and the fact that IDE is dying out. But it will be good to get rid of that wide cable and tidy up my wiring even more :D

742984 2009-01-30 20:23:00 From reading the different CD/DVD forums, it would appear that DVD-R is the disc of choice for single layer discs and DVD+R for dual layer discs.

The best recording media is considered to be Taiyo Yuden followed by Verbatim (made in India or Taiwan) something to do with the dyes used :)

742986 2009-01-30 20:43:00 I've used Princo dvd blanks, SKC cd blanks, and HP LS cd blanks .

As well as + or - . Never bothered with RW's

Never had a prob with any brand of blank . All have worked .

And I've never had coasters .

And most ASUS burners, are or were Pioneer rebadged burners anyway

A few burners have LS, and brands like LG now also have Securedisc .

Its meant to prevent people from copying discs you burn .

It's a pity they don't make sATA cables less than 45cm long. My sATA hard drives are right next to the connection on the motherboard so it would be nice if I could use 10cm or 15cm cables to connect them instead of my 50cm ones. :(

Which one did you get? I'd be interested . I'm having problems with my SATA DVD drive, in that I can't boot from it . . . In every other way it is just fine . Have been round the traps - changing order of booting is BIOS . I haven't pulled the 'puter apart yet . . .

Any suggestions would be welcome! :)

Just have to decide on which model and who to get it from (online)

Any suggestions would be welcome! :)When I get some spare money floating (probably a fortnight away), I have decided on the Liteon 20A6L. Decided to stay with a brand I know and like (and has lasted me over 3 years now with no issues).
Looks like it will suit me nicely

Older Asus were rebadged Pioneer, that's in the past, latest Asus are rebadged Liteon.
