547490 2007-05-06 04:59:00 As Google knows well, you are all preparing it incorrectly:

"Some say that porridge should be allowed to stand and than be re-heated, others say that it should be made the day before it is to be eaten.

"In older times a 'porridge drawer' in crofters kitchens dressers was filled with fresh cooked porridge and when cold was cut into squares for the crofter to take onto the hills for sustenance""

Any babies born to these poorer families were put to “bed” in a drawer, usually above the porridge drawer, and the slow rising heat acted as a kind of central heating for the well-wrapped child".

Is this how you keep your bairns warm beetle?

547491 2007-05-06 05:09:00 This was apparently common practice in not so "older times" in overcrowded Glasgow Gorbals tenements, or so I've read.

When I went through the Gorbals in the early 1960's we saw bottles thrown out of upper windows. It was not a place to linger in.

547492 2007-05-06 05:32:00 Porridge is only to be used as a threat, to really bad children. Be quick, Sue Bratfart is gonna ban it.
Throw the milk & sugar somewhere irrelevant, and get into muesli. Add water to the muesli before going to bed, place it in a safe place and in the morning your breakfast is ready when you are. Luxury!

547493 2007-05-06 05:56:00 nonono you got it all wrong she doesn't want to ban poridge she wants to ban the Di Hydrogen monoxide thats in the porridge erm I mean only allow some of it and the police have discretion over it and don't have to prosecute if its used lightly. Chrisn (9819)
547494 2007-05-06 07:07:00 As usual I have the answer.
A measure of oats from any supermarket,no need to be selective here.
Add milk, the amount with a liitle practice is easy, micro wave for two mins and bobs yer uncle.

547495 2007-05-06 10:53:00 For me, 7 days a week, it's 4 slices of Molenberg toast, 1 with Anathoth black currant jam, one with peanut butter and 2 with Vegemite, or 1 one of those with sliced tomato in season. Plus 2 cups of freshly brewed black coffee. TideMan (4279)
547496 2007-05-06 12:06:00 Try some liquid honey on rolled oats instead of sugar for a real taste treat

Ken

That sounds really nice. I'll have to try it sometime.

My usual choice of bread is Freyas Classic Seed, but when that is sold out, I just get ordinary wheatmeal of whatever brand is on special (except budget - that goes dry & horrible a lot quicker than other brands)

547497 2007-05-06 20:20:00 Porridge is great in this cooler weather we are having.

In addition to oats, I add raisins and coconut, and if available: ground millet and a bit of muesli that has fruit added, or whatever I can find that looks nutritious.

547498 2007-05-07 12:42:00 Ok stupid moment time i guess . . . . . . . . .

But was interested in knowing if people eat porridge, or even eat breakfast i guess . . . . . . . what they like and what brands are good . . . . . . . .

Im not a big breakfast eater . which i should be, but usually in a hurry and off to work with kids in tow . so coffee on the go is more like . and if lucky coffee when i get to work too . :p
But on a weekend morning i like to either have toast or sometimes porridge . . . . . . . . i get those microwave ones specially for me sometimes . . . .
and have regular porridge making stuff in cupboard for when rugrats want some .

cant remember what brand of micro brand i get its in a blue cardboard box . . . . . . . got given some other stuff . . . . . . . . . made that today . . . . . . . and er yeah i can see why it was given away and that was a vogels brand . :yuck:

so breakfast anyone? :p

flavours ? brands or just breakfast ideas?

Porridge . Got to be large or jumbo oats . Get them from a bulk store ( Binn Inn or simular) . Bout $2 . 50 -$3 a kilo . Soak in water over night, nice & soft in the morning . They stay in the body longer than the finer ground grains . Cook in saucepan only .
