547667 2007-05-06 07:09:00 Well Beetle you have done it again: an original thread. Good on ya.

My pick may seem strange but I hear it every day. My wife sings this solo on stage next month and she practices it regularly. For an old (but not old by :) Terry Porrit's standard) song the meaning of the words still speak to us. If it seems sappy, keep in mind that the stage play was in effect a vehicle for empowering women during a very male dominated era - the 1950's.

Something Wonderful from The King and I

This is a man who thinks with his heart,
His heart is not always wise.
This is a man who stumbles and falls,
But this is a man who tries.

This is a man you'll forgive and forgive,
And help protect, as long as you live...
He will not always say
What you would have him say,
But now and then he'll do
Something
Wonderful.

He has a thousand dreams
That won't come true,
You know that he believes in them
And that's enough for you.

You'll always go along,
Defend him where he's wrong
And tell him, when he's strong
He is
Wonderful
He'll always
Needs your love
And so he'll get your love.
A man who needs your love
Can be
Wonderful.

She'll always go along
Defend him when he's wrong
And tell him when he's strong
He is wonderful.
He'll always need her love
And so he'll get her love
A man who needs your love
Can be wonderful.

547669 2007-05-06 07:16:00 Thousands of songs bounce around in my head....

Stoneface dog, swirling fog, gates open on the dark dark night
Standing stone, skull and bone, dead witness to an unseen fight
Beat the drum, beat the drum, beat forever on the endless march
Stricken dumb, cut and run, someone is screaming and the sky is dark

All pretty dark stuff though. For some reason it lightens my mood.

I am the one, Orgasmatron, the outstretched grasping hand
My image is of agony, my servants rape the land
Obsequious and arrogant, clandestine and vain
Two thousand years of misery, of torture in my name
Hypocrisy made paramount, paranoia the law
My name is called religion, sadistic, sacred whore.

I twist the truth, I rule the world, my crown is called deceit
I am the emperor of lies, you grovel at my feet
I rob you and I slaughter you, your downfall is my gain
And still you play the sycophant and revel in you pain
And all my promises are lies, all my love is hate
I am the politician, and I decide your fate

I march before a martyred world, an army for the fight
I speak of great heroic days, of victory and might
I hold a banner drenched in blood, I urge you to be brave
I lead you to your destiny, I lead you to your grave
Your bones will build my palaces, your eyes will stud my crown
For I am Mars, the god of war, and I will cut you down.

547671 2007-05-06 08:24:00 Hurting Each Other By the carpenters............. wot im stuck on at the moment

No one in the world
Ever had a love as sweet as my love
For nowhere in the world
Could there be a boy as true as you love
All my love
I give gladly to you
All your love
You give gladly to me
Tell me why then
Oh why should it be that

(*) we go on hurting each other
We go on hurting each other
Making each other cry
Hurting each other
Without ever knowing why

Closer than the leaves
On a weepin willow baby we are
Closer dear are we
Than the simple letters a and b are
All my life
I could love only you
All your life
You could love only me
Tell me why then
Oh why should it be that

Repeat (*)
(**) cant we stop hurting each other
Gotta stop hurting each other
Making each other cry
Breaking each others heart
Tearing each other apart

Repeat (**)

547673 2007-05-06 09:00:00 This is what I've arranged to be played at my funeral....

As far as my eyes can see
There are Shadows approaching me
And to those I left behind
I wanted you to Know
You've always shared my deepest thoughts
You follow where I go

And oh when I'm old and wise
Bitter words mean little to me
Autumn Winds will blow right through me
And someday in the mist of time
When they asked me if I knew you
I'd smile and say you were a friend of mine
And the sadness would be lifted from my eyes
Oh when I'm old and wise

As far as my Eyes can see
There are shadows surrounding me
And to those I leave behind
I want you all to know
You've always Shared my darkest hours
I'll miss you when I go

And oh, when I'm old and wise
Heavy words that tossed and blew me
Like Autumn winds that will blow right through me
And someday in the mist of time
When they ask you if you knew me
Remember that You were a friend of mine
As the final curtain falls before my eyes
Oh when I'm Old and wise

547674 2007-05-06 09:05:00 As I get older by the minute, the ABBA song "When all is said and done" becomes more and more meaningful to me.

Here's to us one more toast and then we'll pay the bill
Deep inside the two of us can feel the autumn chill
Birds of passage you and me we fly instinctively
When the summer's over and the dark clouds hide the sun
Neither you nor I'm to blame when all is said and done

In our lives we have walked some strange and lonely trecks
Slightly worn but dignified and not too old for sex
We're still striving for the sky no taste for humble pie
Thanks for all your generous love and thanks for all the fun
Neither you nor I'm to blame when all is said and done

It's so strange when you're down and liying on the floor
How you rise shake your head get up and ask for more
Clear-headed and open-eyed whith nothing left untried
Standing carmly at the cross-roads no desire to run
There's no hurry anymore when all is said and done.

Words and music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.

547675 2007-05-06 09:35:00 16 Tons - Tennessee Ernie Ford

Some people say a man is made outta' mud
A poor man's made outta' muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones
A mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong

You load sixteen tons, what do ya get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number 9 coal
And the store boss said "Well, a-bless my soul"

You load sixteen tons, what do ya get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain
Fightin' and trouble are my middle name
I was raised in the canebrake by an ol' mama lion
Cain't no-a high-toned woman make me walk the line

You load sixteen tons, what do ya get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

If you see me comin', better step aside
A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died
One fist of iron, the other of steel
If the right one don't getcha, then the left one will

You load sixteen tons, what do ya get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store.

547676 2007-05-06 09:45:00 "I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
That the dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had"

Dunno why they stick in my mind... maybe just the cool tune in its day. That song sticks in my mind too, it is not the most cheerful song but I really like it. First heard it as part of the intro song to some TV drama so I googled some of the words to find out who it belonged to.

Gary Jules - Mad World
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world ... mad world
Enlarging your world
Mad world
