| 547020 | 2007-05-16 09:01:00 | All predators will retain their killer instincts to some extent however they are trained. Cats will kill rodents and birds but are generally harmless to humans. Dogs however can be a threat to human life and as such must be treated with care. Breeds can be difficult to define and people are of course extremely protective of their pets. What would people think about compulsory sterilisation of aggressive breeds, identified by genetic criteria when in doubt to avoid observer bias? OK. You mention "All predators". The biggest PREDATOR on this planet happens to be the human being as far as I see it. I have no figures but I very much doubt if worldwide, the animals of whatever species are responsible for as many deaths of humans as humans themselves are. When did you ever hear about a Pitbull shooting someone or driving a car into them? I have never noticed any breed of dog starting a war either. So Hitler was born in Austria and without a doubt he seemed to be into genetics. Should we sterilise all Austrians or all Germans who followed him? You also forget about enforcement of any law. Any law if passed must be enforced or it would have no teeth. I am willing to bet that if I picked any wandering dog up and took it home and fed it. Then had the time to give this dog time, affection, training, vet attention and etc I may have a useful pet or watchdog. On the other hand if I gave my help to a human I picked out sleeping rough and gave Him/Her a roof over the head it is possible I would get home to find all my possessions had gone to feed the drug or alcohol problem. |

You forget that PEOPLE are endowed with a conscience . . whilst dogs (and other sub-human types) are NOT . Unfortunately, humans have decided that some sub-species are kinda cute . . . especially in the early, non adult years, and they take these animals into their homes, hearts and even their beds . That's not where animals belong . I too offend that logic with my cat (does one really OWN a cat anyway?) sometimes allowing it to climb onto my bed . . but not at night when I sleep . The dog is not allowed to be in the house when humans are eating . There's nothing worse than a slobbering dog under foot and under the table waiting for food to fall . I try to maintain species segregation for the very reason that I am in control and I decide what my animal(s) will or will not do . My animals do not run around and bite or try to ingest people either . It is not allowed . |

I do not believe *I* used "PREDATOR" in your surname. Where is the broadbrush? I believe that most people have a conscience but some do not. Instict for humans is survival. Do you think that animals do not want to survive. Then too I have never seen any animal commit suicide when I think about it. Possibly that is just roadkill. "Oh here comes a car I will run out in front as my life has no hope." You have a dog and a cat and you segregate? |

I have a dog, a cat and a parakeet too . . . . and they all seem to get along ok . . . but I refuse to allow the dog into the house when I am eating or there are kids present . . for the reason that the dog doesn't seem to handle small bipeds well, and I don't like another life form hovering under the table . The cat is not handle-able by most humans . . she won't allow being picked up or petted unless she wants to be petted . She and the dog have had their differences and they seem to get over it well . . . at least they don't harbor any plans to get even with each other . . . but who knows what an animal is plotting anyway . The cat isn't interested in human food, so there's no slobbering cat 'neath the table waiting for something to fall it's way . When there are children or strangers present, the cat is not to be found . . . smart cat! The parakeet . . . Mr . Ka-Blooey (OK . . I didn't name him) is just "there" and sings when the sun comes up and chatters to his mirror-mate and generally throws food out of the cage and onto the floor . He talks to the wild parakeets and visiting birds out his window, but generally doesn't present much of a footprint in the house at all . He has not, so far, found a way to get at the human food . . I offered him some KFC once . . but he refused to even look at it . . . so I don't believe he is a problem now or in the future . He is safe in his cage from the assaults of children . . . but I have accidentally knocked his cage over in the night when the "wife" moves things around and doesn't tell me . I think that's why the bird becomes very quiet when I am near him . . . . . . |

I guess the ignorance of humans arise from the fact that we are the dominant species of this planet. They do say power corrupts; blinds compassion; blinds the soul. The case with pitbulls truly reflects the saying, huh? |
