2009-02-01 11:14:00 | Any ideas where I could start looking? Done a Hijackthis online analysis - all clear. AV all up to date. Spybot run - all clear. I have disabled a number of "unnecessary" apps in startup using MSCONFIG, but it still takes nearly 10 minutes to fire up the machine (Vista Ultimate - 32bit - with 4GB RAM and a Duo T9400 CPU). Then when the laptop is running, many apps take an inordinate amount of time to fire up. Once the app is open, there is no apparent performance hit, app runs normally. It's amost like UAC is doing it's check in the background... Task Manager, Performance tab showing no unusual activity - well within tolerances - hardly gets above 50%... Symptoms started appearing a week or two ago, but I can't pinpoint a specific date to try to restore to. UAC is turned off. Windows updates up to date... Before this issue appeared, boot up was superfast and apps opened almost before you clicked on their shortcut!! Laptop links to a wireless network at home (or wherever I happen to be, if there's one available).

2009-02-01 11:16:00 | Any of the programs installed using indexing?? If they are, disable it | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2009-02-01 11:20:00 | Where will I find out that Speedy? | johcar (6283) | |
2009-02-01 11:33:00 | I have no idea. I dont use Vista. If its like XP right mouse on the hdd (or partitions / properties). And if programs like Google toolbar, and Nero are installed, I think these also uses indexing , its probably in their options somewhere Post a HJT log, so we can see whats in startup (you'll probably have to tick what you unticked in msconfig first)

2009-02-01 11:44:00 | Hm. Reading symiggy's post on a similar issue, I have similar symptoms (haven't tried replicating his User Account problem though). I will turn of Google Desktop indexing and disable and see if that makes a difference... I will be surprised if it does - it's been installed since I got the machine in November, and the problem has only appeared recently... | johcar (6283) | |

2009-02-01 21:21:00 | taskeng.exe here (searchtasks.answersthatwork.com) Dwm.exe runs Aero SmartLogon\sensorsrv.exe means the webcam can log me in ALU.exe - now disabled Looking at CLMLSvc.exe... HControlUser.exe is what runs the function keys on the laptop DMedia.exe - the jury seems to be out (www.winvistatips.com) on whether this is required or not U3Launcher enables autorun when I plug in a U3 drive.. .... the thing is all of these programs have be installed and running happily together with no adverse affects for some time. So there must be something else that is conflicting that is causing the problem. There appears to be no excess usage of CPU or RAM when these issues (slow start PC/apps) are occurring. Usually sits around 10%. This suggests to me that there is a corrupt file somewhere. I just need to know where to start looking...
