2009-01-31 08:17:00 | Happy new year to all. I got my computer fully stripped of its pre-xmas dilemma's and all dressed up in the same old clothes but cleaned of nasties. I now have the following problem that in the past two days I was unsure about its whereabouts, but today it has reared its ugly head and is about to get terminated. Have been trying to send a 3.7GB compilation of music to a Verbatim 16x DVD+R 4.7GB Media disc.( MCC-004-00) Software I am is using ImageBurn v.2.4.2.0 in the Build / Burn Mode to do the job and an Asus DRW 1814BL DL Optical Drive Compaq Presario S3010AN (PC) WXP Pro + SP3 AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1.67GHz 768MB PC2700 RAM Compiling was all good, sent the folder to disc, completed in 20mins, then went to verify. Didn't seem to be doing much and after 5+ minutes a info window showed on screen saying that the image I am trying to verify is smaller than the one from where it was taken. That was not a good sign to my reckoning - Clicked to 'continue' and when I returned to see the state of affairs I was greeted with a window informing me of the following:- ImgBurn I/O Error! Device:[1:0:0] Asus DRW-1814BL 1.13[F:](ATA) ScsiStatus 0x02 Interpretation: Check condition CDB: 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 Interpretation: Read[10]-Sector 0 Sense Area: 70 00 03 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 00 Interpretation: No Seek When viewed in light the DVD media disc shows the sign of data being on the disc, but I see on its surface one thin (0.5mm?) dark ring about 1.0 mm from the inner circle. Not a good sign. Nero DiscSpeed > tools won't even scan the disc, the Start tab is greyed out. Well, disc scan did begin one scan, reached the 42MB point and stood still from there. I had seen that 42MB point only two days ago when I checked a batch of freshly burned dvd discs ( 5 attempts to get a result-no go), same point of burn onto disc, it 'misses-fails to read/write to disc and then continues to the end. No mention of a R/W error during the process. Hmmmmmmmmm......... I'm getting the same result when I try other DVD media discs that I have created in the past and have been as sweet as until now: getting that Dropdown window about Blank media discs and the ImgBurn 'Build & Burn' option. Click ok and ImgBurn GUI opens and down the bottom of the Gui is notice that 'The disc is not empty'. Computer jams and I have to use Task Manager to free it. That's it. Looks like I have a problem either with my optical hardware Drive and/or media discs. Or software. I did notice today, somewhere when I was about to burn or create the burn settings, that the DMA Mode for my DVD drive was DMA 2 (33). That's a change, the drive is on 80 wire ribbon, was set UDMA 5 (100) and has been as good as gold, 'til 1 to 2 days ago: when I got 5 dud burns one after the other: thought that I had got a 10pack of discs that had slipped past 'Quality Control', as happens. Mid-late dec 08, when I was doing burns to CD or DVD media discs I was getting info windows come on screen saying that "Device 1:0:0 at so & so has a Bad Block". Checked out 'Bad Block' with Atrise FBI ( bad block search tool) but didn't learn much as the results of tests were indefinite: ie Optical drive, media...etc don't see any point in using the tool again. Anyway, what do you think is at the core of the fault I mention?

2009-01-31 09:54:00 | blam6, hi: I usually do use DVD-R media but bought DVD+R in error on thursday night. Multi format DVDRW hardware though, but, I prefer the DVD-R. Have just checked and I did use some DVD-R a couple days ago and they failed too. I'm out of them so I will get some tomorrow. Thanks. Speedy, hi; thanks for the link to the firmware update, I tried to update it about eight weeks ago but for some reason it was a mismatch. I sought it out from Asus site too. Anyway, its installed now. The Secondary IDE cable is only 8 months installed from new, but I have here-abouts a couple of spare ones I will dig out and try. See if I can bye a new one tomorrow or monday. Going to try find a DVD-R amongst my thin stores at the mo and try it out after I change the IDE cable and check the UDMA settings. Thanks. I'll post the outcome back ps: the optical drive's laser is clean. Anyway, let me see what happens shortly. Cheers guys

2009-01-31 12:09:00 | Well, that seems to have improved the situation. I noticed that after the Asus DRW 1814BL Firmware update to v1.14 , the DMA had altered to DMA4. Shut down com and changed the Secondary IDE Cable as well as straightening out a couple of twists in the Primary IDE Cable. I have not checked the DMA for the optic drive since the change of IDE cable, ( can't remember how to get in there to have a look , tired, will find out tomorrow). Tried the DVD discs that were not opening and saying they were blank when they are not. Three of the five DVD discs that I had sent data to in the past two days and were not opening etc, now opened. That's a positive outcome; I don't have to try to do the backup of that compilation again now. I have it twice. Two of the three discs are TDK DVD-R and the other is the Verbatim DVD+R. All good for the time being. Thank you very much, I'd have never thought about Firmware or IDE Cable. Faulty media a dying optical drive, or software, yes. Cheers.

2009-02-01 11:17:00 | All good here. DMA is still at 4 for Secondary IDE channel with DMA 5 for both HDD's. I did have two DVD-RW DL drives but had loaned out one of them on friday. I thought that the hardware change might have caused some disturbance with coms workings or that I may have caused a bad connection to the master optical drives cable when I removed the slave DVD-RW. Connections were sound. I have a bit of a problem with Nero 8 Ultra that's come up in past week. When I use Nero Show Time 4 to watch a movie I'm getting a notice that the 30 day trial period for MPEG-2 Decoder has expired and that I need a DVD-Video Multichannel Plug-in ( for DTS, I think). Well I have enough MPEG-2 Decoders stashed in the computer's 'Codec Halls of Residence' to sink an Armada. Codecs for everything, some 'things' I don't even have, yet. Anyway, I searched on the net and got another one on loan for 30 days from Elecard and installed it. Did the trick but I still get the popup window telling me that I need the 'Plug-in'. I simply click Cancel and it goes away. I have to find the DVD-Video Multichannel Plug-in that is in my files, somewhere. I haven't seen it since I first installed Nero 8 Ultra 12 to 15 months ago and more than likely I forgot to install it when I formatted HDD and reinstalled fresh OS and programs, 6 weeks ago. Nero Burning Rom is claiming its not installed and Nero Vision 4 is playing hide and seek, too. I'll uninstall-reinstall the full program etc. Otherwise, its all good. Once again, thanks guys.

2009-02-01 11:21:00 | If Nero and Nerovison cant detect the burner, this usually means the burner youre using didnt come with the version of Nero thats installed The serial you used for it, is tied to the original burner, (You cant use another burner with that version). Unless you buy a serial number. Which will be different Uninstalling and reinstalling Nero wont fix it. If the burner you loaned to someone else is the burner that Nero came with, thats the only burner it'll work with / detect
