| 550507 | 2007-05-17 03:09:00 | What sort of a police force do we have in Auckland? Are they too busy collecting speeding fines to bother with , non-revenue offences. Or are they simply too scared? |

Its not a mater of them being too scared, more a mater of living in a society that has gone overboard in the Political Correctness dept. Teens no longer fear the police and don't have any respect for adult authority either, which will only get worse with the passing of the anti smacking bill and the fact that many parents believe that they no longer have to be responsible for their uncontrollable teens. The government should introduce 2 years compulsory military service for all New Zealanders aged 18. such as many other EU countries such as Switzerland and Israel have been doing for ages. |

| 550512 | 2007-05-17 10:50:00 | I can sympathise with the gut reaction to give young men compulsory military service to sort them out. Yes the Army could straighten out most of todays anti-social, unmotivated young men, and turn them into productive citizens, but that is not the purpose of the armed services, they are not a reform school for societies malcontents and misfits, attractive as the proposition may be. Having 24 years commissioned service behind me I can relate to the idea that the Army could sort them out - the wise guys quickly find out that they can't beat the system, and life is quite tolerable if they go with the flow, and for those who try to buck the army system, they quickly learn how to be a big time loser. I have yet to meet anyone who has done time in a military glasshouse who wants a second helping, in fact their attitude change is frequently verging on the miraculous. I can commend a military life for those so inclined, one makes life long genuine friendships, there is still quite a lot of opportunity for adventure, even in peace keeping, and for those interested in flying, the opportunity to fly vintage military aircraft older than they are - C130H Hercules 1967 & 1970. P3B Orions 1966 & 1971, UHID Iroquois 1967 (1st 5) But social works/reform school administration is not the function of the forces. The only way there is going to be a change in society for the better, insofar as gangs are concerned, is when our uninspired, overly politically correct MPs see that there political future,(and their excessive renumeration and perks) depends on ensuring strong action is taken. Harking back to the seventies Inspector Gideon Tate sorted gangs successfully until the politicians reined him in. So if you don't like what is happening, let your MPs know, and make them uncomfortable about it. |

Of course we would have to get Sue to ban smacking and death so our little darlings are all safe in the event they get sent outside NZ. Which is an excellent idea, Im sure teh yanks will have a war or 3 going on that we can tag along for, Send over all the gang members as well, give em big guns with no ammo and get em to search the desert for baddies. |

Assuming by EU you mean the European Union you're wrong. Neither Switzerland nor Israel are members. Martynz |

How much property and how many people must be hurt and affected before they take action? |
