550455 2007-05-16 23:07:00 Hi Team

What is the approximate actual driving time from Auckland to Palmerston North, allowing a very early (pre 7:00am) start, sticking to 100-105Kmph max and normal traffic conditions?

Refreshment and comfort stops would be additional of course.

Cheers

550457 2007-05-16 23:36:00 I would say about 5 and a half hours if you get a good run. Tukapa (62)
550458 2007-05-16 23:38:00 It takes just under 5 hours to drive to Wanganui with one petrol stop. Via the Parapara highway...which is of course one of the greatest drives in NZ.

So, I would say 4 to 4.5 hours to Palmy via the desert road.

And either that distance/drive time calculator is on mad drugs or its simply to clever for me. Seems totally out of whack.

Just put your cursor on Auckland and the times to all the other places listed are given

4 hours to Palmerston is a bit optimistic, that would mean Auckland to Wellington is 6 hours and to do that you have to be moving along.
The distance is 650 km and you would have to average over 100kmph

Auckland to Palmerston North is 530 km - I would allow 6 hours.

550460 2007-05-17 00:33:00 Fair enough, I very rarely take the desert road.

As for the travel calculater, Is it saying that Auckland to Wanganui is 7 hours and 15 minutes?:waughh:

I think it really depends on what way yer gonna go . . . . . .

If you detour through San Jacinto, add a few weeks to a month to the drive . . and roll up your windows real tight!

You'll make very good time, and for most of the travel there are very few traffic lights in the way with no pedestrians to speak of either .

Refreshments will be sushi (catch it yourself) and how much more comfortable can you be than in your own little car? :p

Unfortunately Joe, Google Maps doesn't have a route from San Jacinto to Auckland New Zealand, the nearest I can do is give you the directions to drive from San Jacinto to Auckland in Scotland:

550463 2007-05-17 02:09:00 Anything under 6.5 hours is very good going, from PN to AK.

I drive to Bulls, take SH1 through to Taihape, Waiouru, on to Taupo, and turn off at Tirau (can't stand Hamilton, sorry), and go via SH2 (?) On a good day, 6.5 hours to get to Albany, North Shore City. On a bad day, 8 hours.

If you leave PN at 7am, and stop for lunch, breaks along the way, you should get to AK around 1.30-2pm

550464 2007-05-17 04:59:00 Thanks Guys

I'll take it as 6 hours on a clear run and about 7 to 7.5 hours with stops. So, a 6:30am start should see me there by 2pm. We have to stop regularly because Mrs T has a spinal condition that hurts like hell if she sits still too long.

I'm going down for the Manawatu Jazz Festival but want to do some work in Palmy after I arrive so that will leave me 2.5-3 hours to earn the moolah to pay for the trip.

If I didn't have to take Mrs T and Billy Jnr with me, I'd take a crack at Metla's suggestion of 4.5 hours, but I'd have to have cruise at 125 k's +, keep my eyeballs skinned, use full noise radar protection and possess the luck of the Irish to get there alive or with my licence intact (preferably both). :D

Cheers
