550048 2007-05-15 10:21:00 I've bought all sorts of computer bits via trademe, and even sold a componant via this forum (the PC one).

I more or less know what's what with (old) computer bits, and am aware of the risks of buying anonymously. And things have worked out great. I'm happy, buyers of my stuff are happy.

So now I'd like a better stereo and I'm out of my comfortable area. I'll prolly just buy a new one. But I have a nagging feeling that I'd get better value 2nd hand just like you do with many things, computers among them.

Amp (with phono input, I have albums), multi CD, tape, speakers. Not clear on the latest and greatest of standards like dolby version X. Price: Less than $1000

I've looked at some trademe listings but just aren't sure. Any anecdotes and advice would be appreciated.

550049 2007-05-15 10:32:00 Stereo amp or home theatre amp (alot have dropped the phono input, but some still have it).

Is the $1000 just for the amp, or does that include speakers and turntable etc (umm I think it does, I just reread your post).

Buy a known hi-fi brand. Even some hi-fi companies overrate their power outputs for their home theatre amps. Anyway, give us some auctions you have looked at to give us some idea for what you are looking at.

550050 2007-05-15 10:38:00 I'll keep my current turntable, just want to plug it in :)

$1k for everything, including speakers.

Home theatre is a secondary consideration. I'm thinking it'll be an option with most stuff, but my original spec is just an old fashioned music playing setup.

550051 2007-05-15 10:38:00 The setup I got from trademe for $350 is stunning.

Feels like a band are in my room, Albums I have heard hundreds upon hundreds of times have suddenly launched into new life.

And the poor quality of mp3's is now shocking. Have the PC hooked up to the amp via the digital output, something I never thought I would have a use for.

There might be some useful info in the thread I started when I bought mine.

If it were me, Id link 3 systems your looking at and ask which one represents better value and why?

550056 2007-05-15 12:09:00 Seriously out of all the ones listed on TradeMe I would only be looking at these:

www.trademe.co.nz

www.trademe.co.nz

www.trademe.co.nz

www.trademe.co.nz

www.trademe.co.nz

and only after I had asked the seller a few pertinent questions relating to what you want.

Don't scoff at teh Kenwood (especially if it one of the ones made in Japan) as they pump out great sound. It looks similar to the one I bought about 10 years ago. I have since added a subwoofer and changed the amp but am still using the speakers cos they still put out great sound.
