549568 2007-05-13 20:14:00 That sure is a nice piece of work. I have seen similar on the net but never worked out just how they function.

It must screenshot the top right and convert it to an image, but wouldn't that just give a huge graphic?

Actually I think its a flash file .. this might be the jscript file that runs it

549571 2007-05-14 01:36:00 To answer the question directly, it sure is flash but there's no 'screenshot' type process happening. The main effect (the peel effect in relation to page content) is achieved by use of the wmode parameter (www.adobe.com). sal (67)
549572 2007-05-14 11:29:00 It works by infuriating the viewer to the point where they block the ad. However the conditioned consumer will salivate and give money to the sponsor while howling at the full moon. R2x1 (4628)
549573 2007-05-14 11:58:00 For the poor Linux/Opera users, here's an updated custom stylesheet that blocks the dreaded purple blob.

Site admins: Would it be possible to display this ad only for user-agent strings that report the OS as Windows? The other ads are fine, but this one renders the site completely unusable, leaving no option but to block it.

.fairfax_nav,
.jcornerSmall,
.jcornerBig,
.jcornerBigEmbed,
#advert-banner,
#header,
#navigation,
.tfoot,
td[width="170"],
img[alt="PC World Forums"],
embed[name="jcornerSmallObject"]
{display: none;}

[edit: It appears that the stylesheet is applied before the ad is inserted. I'll see if I can drum up a javascript file to deal to it.]

549574 2007-05-14 12:47:00 Looks like it was my CSS - I accidentally blocked classes instead of IDs. Here's the updated version:

.fairfax_nav,
#jcornerSmall,
#jcornerBig,
#advert-banner,
#header,
#navigation,
.tfoot,
td[width="170"],
img[alt="PC World Forums"],
embed[name="jcornerSmallObject"]
{display: none;}

549576 2007-05-14 13:18:00 1. Save the above code as a .css file somewhere.
2. Right-click page.
3. Edit site preferences.
4. Click the 'display' tab.
5. In the 'my style sheet' section, click the 'choose' button.
6. Browse to the file you just saved.
7. Click the necessary buttons to close all the boxes.
8. Enjoy the new, clean, purble-blob-less PressF1.
