743432 2009-01-31 08:22:00 Yeah, I know but I suggested UBCD if he just wanted to check HDD/RAM.

I personally use UBCD4Win, which is my favourite tool.

Burn that to a CD and run it.

But I think Seatools freezing is a pretty good indication of a memory issue

743434 2009-01-31 19:02:00 Update .

In the middle of the night it occurred to me that as I now had windows running, maybe I could run Seagate Tools for windows as it runs under a Windows environment not a DOS one and the same with memtest .

So I downloaded both of them and thinks got interesting .

Seatools passed the HDD on the SMART test and the Short Test both specific and generic but failed it on the long test both specific and generic . :(

Wonder what the difference is between the two tests?

I do wish these HDD testers showed you a map of your disk like they used to . I found it helpful to be able to see where the bad sectors were and where the programmes were .

The other thing is the modern day HDD testing programmes don’t seem to have any functions to attempt a repair of the disk or any recovery functions . Or do some?

Memory Test has be running just over an hour and not found any errors .

So it looks like the HDD is on the way out .

Finally I note she has Office 2007 installed and it doesn’t work . I figure because of the Registry damage it needs to be reinstalled but she doesn’t have any disks . She purchased the laptop secondhand and didn’t get any disks .

What I was hoping to do was get it going and cleaned up, clone it and fit a new HDD, but that may be out of the question now unless anyone knows how to repair that part of the registry .

Just thinking as I type, I wonder if there is any Restore Points available? I’ll check .

And thanks guy’s for the UBCD & UBCD4Windows tip . I’ll follow up on that one as they’re programmes I’ve never heard of before .

743435 2009-01-31 20:22:00 UBCD4Windows has a GUI interface just like Windows, IF you had that, you could have gotten system restore to run from the Bootable CD - Example (www.imagef1.net.nz) - While UBCD is a good set of programs its not that user friendly unless you know what you are doing. UBDC4Windows can be downloaded from here (http://www.ubcd4win.com/) 256Mb BUT there is some work to do to get it going, you need to have a working XP Computer, as well as either a XP CD so you can copy its contents to the PC for disc creation, or a PC that has the I386 folder in already. Its not that hard to create, and I have written out instructions on how to do it, if you want it. (PDF format.)

I do have the finished Whole CD burnt as an ISO file ready to be burnt to a blank CD - but it is a tad over 600Mb - let me know if you want it and I'll PM instructions on how to download it from one of my servers.

To check if the drives got bad sectors - you can try HDD Regenerator (http://www.dposoft.net/) -Its not free for the full version, but the demo version does fix 1 sector at a time per Run - its a good tool for finding out just how bad or not the HDD actually is.

Considering it's a Toshiba drive and you're running Seatools, that's to be expected. Seatools only gives detailed information when running on a Seagate drive.

The difference between the short and long tests are simple. The short test will test a small portion of the drive, I think the start, end and some random points in between. The Full test does the entire drive.

You can "repair" sectors with Seatools on a Seagate drive only. You have a Toshiba drive and unfortunately they're the only ones who don't make a diagnostic tool of any kind.

If you can get Speedfan on there, get a report of the SMART status. That might show you something interesting. (like quite a lot of reallocated sectors!)

Probably not possible. The amount of damage done sounds pretty major. It would be much easier to reinstall windows properly to a new drive

No No Agent, it is definitely a Seagate drive, see post #4 last paragraph .

However, the version of Seatools for Windows that I downloaded doesn't seem to have any repair provisions?

Thanks very much for the offer WT.

I've eventually got it downloaded. (Third Attempt from third different mirror. The first two had MD5 Hash failures, whatever they are. )

I've now got all the files in the correct folder and verified, so I'm up to the Windows part. Might have lunch first, can't do these things on an empty stomach. I'll get back to you on the PDF instructions if my comprehension lets me down on their site. ;)

Hmm . I think perhaps the windows version can't do repairs since the drive and filesystem is in use by windows .

You will need to use the DOS version then . If you used the graphical version and it froze up, try the text version: . seagate . com/support/seatools/SeaToolsDOS110 . iso" target="_blank">www . seagate . com

if that freezes also, then you'll just have to put the drive into another PC and run either one of the DOS versions from there .

Thanks WT.

I've got as far as having an iso image now, just haven't got it to disk.

I hope you've got in the PDF Instructions that: "You have to do as much as you can, including the build, in safe mode." AVG stuffs things even when it's turned off. (don't know about other Anti Virus Programmes)

Anyway, just a burn away and then we'll try and work out how to use it. :D
