550529 2007-05-17 07:50:00 Maybe you can get the natives embroiled in a heated debate on how to pronounce the name of the place. :p

Tau-Rang-A

Tau : As in the Greek symbol
Rung: As in I rung yo momma!
Ah: As in Ahh I see.

So, Tau-rung-ah

550530 2007-05-17 07:56:00 It's also known as the Costa Geriatrica.

I have to visit from time to time, but the best part is the flight out.
Odd thing is getting a flight in is easy, but all the planes are full that leave....

You must have been particularly naughty to be sentenced to a few days there though Foxy?

And while you might have your own wheels when you arrive, they may not still be on the vehicle when you leave.

550531 2007-05-17 07:58:00 I was under the impression it was:

toe-wrong-ah

In much the same way Taupo is:

toe-paw

....as I saw on a personalised plate when I was there last, not catching trout

550532 2007-05-17 08:01:00 So the geriatrics have heavy duty walking frames to carry away the stolen wheels? At least it shows initiative, and more energy than some people seem to attribute to Tauranga residents. Graham L (2)
550533 2007-05-17 08:20:00 Don't listen to those people, Foxy. They are just jealous and we don't all have one foot in the grave. The large number of schools around here must say something about the ages.
God's waiting room!! Most have to wait somewhere and it's far better than a lot of places.
The Mount has been mentioned. The beaches are lovely. I've seen a few around the world and these take some beating.
Some great cafes..the cafe society is booming. There is one out by Tauriko called Villa Ridge and Simply Irrestible at Sulphur Point, to name just a couple of good ones, with great food, as well.
If you like wine, Mills Reef Winery at Bethlehem and Morton Estate near Katikati are worth a visit. While you are at Katikati take a look around at the murals on the buildings. Katikati is only about 20 mins or so from here.
McLaren Falls Park is worth a visit as is "The Quarry".
There are the thermal pools in the district. One at Mt Maunganui, the Fernland Spa off Cambridge Road, plus another at Oropi.
Maybe take a cruise out to see the dolphins or do some fishing.
Some excellent restaurants, not all expensive.
Whatever you do, just enjoy.

550534 2007-05-17 09:04:00 Ignore my previous posts. Went to Mills Reef winery for lunch last Labour Weekend.

One word for the place.... Wonderful!

550535 2007-05-17 09:17:00 I am banned from that area, my Ex lives there !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PJ :D :D Poppa John (284)
550536 2007-05-17 09:17:00 Lived there for 13+ years (doubtful I'll ever go back, even to retire :p)
As mentioned:
The Mount (walk around it, or up it, up to you);
McLarens Falls and McLaren Falls Park
Fernlands hot pools (off Cambridge Rd)

A lot has changed, even for me when I visit approx once or twice yearly (parents and sister over there) a lot changes between each time.

AS for pronounciation, bob_doe_nz was correct, tau (toe) rung a

Avoid traffic from about 8am to 10am and 3pm till 7pm

And how do we pronounce Wanganui these days? Paparaumu is often mentioned as Paraparam.

Take this one:-

A person joins the Auckland City Traffic Department. He gets told to do parking tickets up the hill and be back by 1:00 pm.
2:00 pm comes and goes. 3:00 pm comes and goes.
The Supervisor goes to find the recruit.

Explanation:-

The recruit went into Karangahape Road and found a dead horse. It took him some time to drag the horse into Queen Street. This so he could write a ticket.
