549720 2007-05-14 06:24:00 For an alternative history of cricket, you could try Douglas Adams's Life the Universe and Everything (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life%2C_the_Universe_and_Everything). Graham L (2)

Definitely needs a 5 day test where it is the Poms second innings, they need 600 runs and are 5 wickets down at the end of the fourth day. Ooops, I forgot. They are playing for a draw... That would really freak out Surfer Joe.

549722 2007-05-14 07:24:00 An "Over" consists of 6 balls bowled from one and of the cricket pitch which swaps after the 6th ball has been bowled.

4 runs are scored when the batsman hits the ball which bounces once before going over the boundary

a maximum of 6 runs are scored when the batsman hits the ball over the boundary on the full.

The main object of the game is for the team that bats first to score as many runs (between the wickets) as possible inside the 50 overs, the team that was bowling then goes into bat and tries to get a higher score inside of the 50 overs in order to win the match.

Which is why it goes on and on and on and on and you have more fun watching paint dry.

I was using the One Dayer because it is the "easiest" concept to explain to a non cricket playing Yank .
As for the Poms and cricket, lets just say they got knocked out of the Cricket World Cup before the Kiwis . :D

You could say the same about many aspects of the America's Cup (as much as I enjoy watching it.)

A "game" in the America's Cup doesn't go for five days just to end in a draw....

No your right it doesn't, however it feels like it is when the boats are sailing in 11knts of breeze and your watching from the land... even though Pete Montcomentry makes it sound like there is a whole lot more happening that what you can see. ;)

Agreed. Maybe he should commentate test cricket. That'll shut him up! There's no way even he can enthuse about that.

I think 3 and 5 day Test Match cricket is for the traditional purist, and ODIs are for the modern cricket fan and advertising $$$$.

549729 2007-05-14 10:15:00 I agree he should start with watching an ODI, as One Dayers seam to be the most popular and most interesting form at the moment.

I hope we haven't confused joe, I play cricket and some of the explainations get a bit hard to understand :P
