550130 2007-05-15 23:40:00 Hi all,

our boss's last day is tomorrow (he was made redundant :groan: ) so we are looking for somewhere we can buy a present for him.

His hobby is making films (in fact after he leaves he's setting up his own production company). So we would like to buy him something relating to films/movies... something like a mock reel with film in it...something like that. Could be just a display thingy, like a trophy or something but its gotta be relating to films like a reel or a movie camera...

Anyone know any good shops in Auckland, preferably west or central auckland where we could find stuff like that?

I've looked at some engraving companies' websites but they don't seem to have any gifts that are film-related.

help!

550132 2007-05-16 07:46:00 If he already has a video camera you could get him a blank cassette, or one of those film scene snap cue "black board" things that they use on set when they call for scene 100, take 25 and "ACTION!". winmacguy (3367)

Yes, we should have. Last week we had to buy a present for another staff member who left so we were focused on that last week....

(geee...something's in the air, with all these staff leaving!! - na our organisation is going through restructing at the moment so staff being made redundant etc)

Anyway, Auckland is a difficult place to buy film stuff as I've just discovered. We spent 2 hours driving around to 4 different shops that were "recommended" (yeah right!), and in the end we only got a toy black slate board, and a totally unrelated-to-film present... I'm sure he'll like it though.

thanks anyway

There's "traditional" film stuff like the black slate board which I believe most people would associate with making movies or TV ads which also makes for an affordable leaving present and then there is the more current modern film stuff which would allow the person receiving it to actually run off and go and make a movie (a DV Cam and an iMac with iLife) which would not be classed as an affordable leaving present even though it would be very useful. The only other stuff that could be associated with movies would be movie props from a real movie which the person would have been involved in(not practical if they hadn't made a movie ;) )

Considering that you got him the slate, I would say you made the right choice.
