549092 2007-05-11 07:59:00 Was phoned by a local girl as she had signed up with Xtra dialup and was getting no dial tone when she tried to connect.
She rang the helpdesk (now in the Phillipines) and was told that it is because her PC runs Win98 and that is too old for all this digital stuff and she would need to upgrade to a newer version of Windows.

549093 2007-05-11 08:08:00 What a load of rubbish!
I've just put together an old HP Brio running Win98 for a little old lady and it dials up perfect.

This is what happens when big corporates out-source things to heaven-knows-where.

549094 2007-05-11 08:09:00 Sounds about right. ;)

Very logical too. There won't be any fixes for people having problems using W98, w95, w3.1, etc in the database the helpdesk access. So the only way to get help from the helpdesk is to be using an OS for which they have got database entries. :D So the punter can be told, after the x minutes allowed, "reinstall the operating system".

The people who answer the phones don't need to know anything about computers; they're not paid enough for that. :D

549095 2007-05-11 08:11:00 Xtra was very wise to make sure their dial-up help service is in the far distance.
If users here could get their hands on the throats of those morons, capital charges would be laid daily.

549097 2007-05-11 08:32:00 I can get WFWG 3.11 on the internet from my ADSL through my XP machine, and now they're saying win98 can't handle dialup!!?? what a load of ****. Dialup can run on ANYTHING Agent_24 (57)
549098 2007-05-11 11:00:00 Simple answer, get them to switch to another ISP. Xtra is expensive, and all you do is pay Xtra for something you can get cheaper elsewhere. When I was on dial up I used slingshot who were very reliable with dialup. rogerp (6864)

549100 2007-05-11 17:14:00 lol bad people indeed.......

as for the clients problem she's probably got the phone line plugged into the 'phone' connector on the modem rather than the 'line' connector

549101 2007-05-11 20:05:00 Hehe, yes, did she forget a PC is digital or does she think there's a little mouse in a wheel running everything?

And no, she didn't have it plugged into phone, she tried another cable, she has the correct regional settings.

I won't know yet, I was going to have a look but she cancelled the account with Xtra.
She is signing up with Xnet for now on this PC, so I'll see what happenes with her error.

When they get a new PC she will switch over to broadband.

Its a very old PC, 64Mb, 4 Gb HDD, no NIC, CDRom only etc. Its not worth adding bits to.
