744362 2009-02-02 21:20:00 Currently I have Windows Vista on my PC, and recently I installed Ubuntu 8.04, just to get a taste of linux (I didn't use Wubi). however, I had problems after installing NVIDIA drivers: it looks good after installation, but a dialog box "Ubuntu is running in safe graphics mode --- Your graphics driver and configuration cannot be recognised..." (things like that) after rebooting the computer. I can still install NVIDIA driver again, and everything will be good, but who installs graphics driver every time they boot their computer?

Looking forward to replies, and thanks to those who do.

744363 2009-02-03 00:06:00 How do you install the drivers? Agent_24 (57)
744364 2009-02-03 00:23:00 Not too sure of a fix as I use ATI but does this sound like the problem?

Sounds like Hardy has a bit of a problem with newer nVidia cards .

744365 2009-02-03 01:58:00 In my experience the pre-packaged nvidia drivers for ubuntu are useless. Grab the latest binary installer from http://nvidia.com/ and use that, you'll probably have much better luck.

Note that this app must run under the commandline, and X (the GUI) must not be running at the same time.

744367 2009-02-04 20:54:00 Thanks for all the replies . I install my drivers with this:
1) disable X-Server with:
sudo etc/init . d/gdm stop

2) install by running the command
sudo sh nvidia . run
(note: I've downloaded the driver from nvidia . com, copied to the home folder, and its full name is "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-177 . 80-pkg1"

3)during the process, nVIDIA compiled its own graphical kernel (or something like that) since I don't have one (note: I'm writing this under Vista since I can't configure internet in Ubuntu, so it may take a further look)

4) restart the X-Server by
sudo etc/init . d/gdm start, and everything goes back alright .

Also, my graphics card is not particularly new . It's a 7600 GT, probably quite new for Ubuntu, but with all the hard-out 8600, 9600 and even 260 (dual core) cards I'm happy that it's new !

Also also, thanks to Catweazle for the link . It's the same problem, but no solutions had been discussed to be work .

744368 2009-02-04 21:38:00 Ah you'd be surprised, nVidia support is pretty good in Linux ... by the time the cards are released, they're generally supported and can be setup & running as-per your previous post :)

Now, you just need to try some games, like a fav of mine: UT2004 or the GOTY edition ;)

744369 2009-02-05 04:30:00 You mean on Vista, Silence? I used to play UT2004, although I preferred ChaosUT2 mod. Runs very well, even with (almost) highest settings. No slowdowns or things like that, even in Vista.

If it's on Linux, is it with Wine HQ? Please don't torture my internet as my one is dialup. Broadband in NZ is too rubbish, don't want to donate money to them.

BTW, my card is actually Elsa Gladiac 760 GT, but does that matter? Or does my card perform better than everyone else :D

744370 2009-02-05 05:00:00 He does mean on Linux, not Vista - and there are native binaries for them, you don't even need wine. The Linux installer is on the original game disks, so no internet torture required. Erayd (23)
744371 2009-02-05 05:45:00 Yep, I saw a file called "linux-installer.sh". I tried to double click it and click "Run in Terminal", but it says that I don't have writing permission. It's probably because I didn't have super-user privileges.

Then I have to run it in terminal. I tried to type "sudo sh $cdrom0/linux-installer.sh", but sh is only for *.run files. What should I type in terminal, or ultimately, how should I give super-user privilege to the installer.

p.s. Is it because I installed some other drivers/dependencies (like ALSA-driver-linuxant) that made nVIDIA drivers behave bad?
