551270 2007-05-20 00:45:00 Ok guys, im trying to figure out the name of a formal shirt that buttons up to the neck and doesnt have the traditional collar. It's oriental looking, black..
Clues?
I think this image is pretty close link (www.orienttouch.com)

551271 2007-05-20 00:49:00 Definitely a Mandarin-type collar....and the buttons/fasteners are called "Frogs"...but that's as far as my fashion sense goes..

I wear jeans, cowboy boots and Hawaiian shirts.

551274 2007-05-20 03:41:00 I think there was another name for such shirts, but I can't remember it.

I wore a scarlet one to the Kindergarten Teacher's Training College ball in 1967. I've never liked ties, let alone "black ties" I don't think my shirt had buttons, just a zip on the side of the collar and along the shoulder to cater for those of us whose heads are larger than their necks.

551276 2007-05-20 06:07:00 Excellent. That helps. Need to find a hire place that would actually have that kind of shirt.Dress Circle in Christchurch (agent Wilkins Formal Wear) have that type of shirt minus the front braiding bits the images in the previous posts show. See here (www.dresscircle.co.nz). Think they are called "Nehru" shirts. Jen (38)
551277 2007-05-20 06:19:00 C'mon, Jen . . . I have a few Nehru shirts ( . chandnichowk . co . uk/acatalog/Nehru_Shirt . html" target="_blank">www . chandnichowk . co . uk) left over from the '60, and they aren't quite like this . . . the collar is different and Nehru shirts don't have the Frogs,
. . . . . . the front braiding bits . . . . . . .

I KNOW they are called FROGS ( . macculloch-wallis . co . uk/category . aspx/DecorativeFasteners" target="_blank">www . macculloch-wallis . co . uk) . . . my deceased momma tol' me so .

Nice try though!

551278 2007-05-20 06:44:00 Some years ago, when i lived in Auckland. there used to bw an Oriental Market down on the waterfront. Do you have anything like that in Christchurch.? Why not stop & ask a few Chinese people in the street. Who knows what conversations you might have. PJ Poppa John (284)
551279 2007-05-23 03:31:00 The name "turtleneck" has drifted to the surface of my memory pool. ;) This appears to be an aklternate name for the polo neck. I'm certain that my shirt didn't have any buttons. Graham L (2)
