| 551481 | 2007-05-21 08:33:00 | sorry dont know if this is allowed or not. if it isnt, moderators please delete Hi. I am representing a research project that is about to start, looking into self injury. We are looking for people to help with things like: -Survey Writing -Publicity -Getting people to do the survey (real life, and online) -Helping process the results, get them entered online. -Writing up results etc -Giving the project a face, and updating the site often (with news etc) and any other odd bits that may be needed to be done. You can contact me either by replying here, or sending me a message. Or you can go to siresearch.jerrado.com and sign up there to talk to us. Thanks! I'll be following this with interest. A good friend of mine now spends her days wearing long-sleeve tops to hide the three large "X"-shaped scars on each wrist. That was many years ago, and I can still remember how devastated I was when she told me. A couple of days later we had lunch on the waterfront, and she showed me. Words cannot descibe how I felt. The air cleared a bit when the "anger" stage of the emotional process came around. I vented, and by that stage we could (almost) laugh about it. Never again. |

That's good, but when you post a subject of that nature on an open forum such as this, full of individuals and opinions, you would be naive not to expect a whole raft of views. Views that people are entitled to give. Good luck with it. |

Shock hoooror...No, not really. What i do find surprising is that some people will go to great lengths, and become unusually troll like in order to out yell any conversation about such matters, or degrade it into silly stereo types... Anything BUT actually deal with issues, or allow others to do the same. |

| 551486 | 2007-05-21 09:43:00 | I know a person who slashes themselves quite regularly with a razor blade on the arms and legs (deep cuts but not life endangering), she does this to feel connected back into the real world by the pain. The behaviour is often preceded by an emotional hurt such as boyfriend trouble, stress of exams. She is put in care for a few days pronounced "ok" and then the cycle repeats sooner or later, the next one will be the 8th or 9th, I've lost count. She is a top student now moved on to University. Self-indulgent behaviour in teen-agers is very difficult to deal with especially when they already have "insight" into themselves and the problem but seem not to be able to stop the self-destructive behaviour anyway. | zqwerty (97) | ||
| 551487 | 2007-05-21 13:59:00 | I have a niece that engraved her first 3 initials in her arm with a razor while at school. She's now 14 going on 15 did it when she was 13. After a few choice words and swift kick in the butt by her g/dad she soon stopped doing that. Now she has those 3 initials for life or until she gets a plastic surgeon to fix it. Her excuse for doing it was peer pressure, because all her mates where doing it. | Narmie (12196) | ||
| 551488 | 2007-05-22 03:13:00 | From what I have heard there are many different ways to self harm. I read a pamphlet once about all the different types and after reading it I was pretty sure a friend of mine would be considered as a self harmer. She would make a cut etc on her face but instead of re cutting she would just pick at it until it bled and became so much worse, now she has several scars. Even though she doesn't use a razor blade to it it and even though she doesn't try to hide it exactly I'm pretty sure she would count as a self harmer? I asked her why she does it and she said she has no deep meaningful reason for doing it, kind of just a habit. She certainly would never seek help for it but a site where she could go to learn and stuff, without everybody knowing who she was etc would perhaps be a good idea. | 551489 | 2007-05-22 06:19:00 | Let me ask a question here, as I decided that I should take a second or third look at this post and the material in it . Even I can learn something . Would you proffer to state that ALL self-destructive activities are approximately the same consideration in causal genesis? What about tattoos and body piercing? Are these NOT about the same thing? If you would like, I can keep this <unclicked> for a while and try to view some of your statistics, if you have any on things like I just mentioned . I have a theory in mind that has not yet jelled into a stream of facts or paragraphs yet . I need a little more input, but I will be watching you with a fairly jaundiced eye for any histrionics and sweeping assumptions . I worked in LA as a biomedical engineer for a few years, between automotive stints really . I had as a very good friend Dr . Melvin Jones, the doc in charge of the PIC or Psychiatric Intensive Confinement ward . We talked many hours about things that made me feel there is a greater motivation . . . and commonality too . . . . again, poor words, but understandable, for diagnosis and treatment of self-destructive activity . His statements led me to believe less in idiopathy and more likely in a genesis or congenital and learned response . He told me of many of the permutations of the condition and I got to see some of what he was telling me first hand in the lock-down and dayrooms in that mental ward . I warn you that I am going to hang tough on this subject, and if I detect that this is a game or just a lark, considering the seriousness and damage that this sort of posting can do, I'll become really angry . . . . again . If you ever get to visit a NZ PIC, I suggest that you do so to get a better view of the subject that I suspect you are not really qualified to play with . I will hold judgment on that part of my observations till later . I DO expect that most all anecdotal information will be held to a minimum . I respect too many of the people here to allow them to be cowed into snake oils and poultices . |

| 551490 | 2007-05-22 06:39:00 | What about tattoos and body piercing? Are these NOT about the same thing? And here we have an interesting point... Somewhere there is a line, where at one end of the scale is vanity, and at the other end of the scale is "self destructive behaviour" Where on this line society views any activity, such as covering ones face with paint, sticking shiny bits of metal in oneself, carving initials, or even branding oneself, is govered by things such as fashion. I'd also like to add drinking, smoking, playing the pokies, and various other activitys to the list of things to do that in this case sit on a line somewhere between fun and self destructive behaviour... Again, it is largely attitude that decides from which end of the line these activitys might be. However, for the purpose of this thead, it's allready defined... "self injury", unless of course we could view a tatoo as a self injury...... is this decoration (img442.imageshack.us), or self abuse? Personally i'm envious... She got The Ramones tat done in one sitting on Friday! |
