| 551018 | 2007-05-19 19:28:00 | I applaud you. It sometimes irritates me when people blatantly make those common mistakes.I think you'll find they're not made "blatantly", but from a "it-doesn't-matter" or a "looks-OK-to-me" point of view. An example of potential miscommunication (not really a grammar issue, but should illustrate the point of clear communication): How many ways can you read the following sentence? "I don't think he killed his family" In fact, there are 7 potential ways of interpreting that sentence, all with a different meaning, depending on where the intonation emphasis is placed. This illustrates the importance of clear communication, of which grammar is part. Bad grammar irritates me too, but I know I'm anal about it. Unfortunately, it would be extremely difficult to change the status quo (oops! Latin!! - see above), and life is too short... |

R we being less than onest when we 'Old F#rts' remember our parents and Grandparents lack of ability in gramma & speling - dos it matter orl that much? We only need to compare the 70 year old writing stiles of Nevil Shute and W.E. Johns (Biggles) with those of modern orthas. Our language is ever changing, probly for the best - as many rules of grammar are ridiculous and inconsistent. Must we return to ye olde days when thou, thy and begat were in vogue or accept this natural progression? Yeah, no mate - like, whaddya reckon eh? |

| 551021 | 2007-05-20 11:02:00 | Some advice for you Roddy Boy: The following quote is a great salve for the soul when faced with grammatical heresy or rampant illiteracy: "God Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference!" For "God", substitute whatever or whichever Deity or epithet for belief structure you find makes you feel most comfortable . I take satisfaction from writing as well as I can, warts and all, and I accept that others will write to whatever standard they are capable of, or are prepared to accept . I do enjoy the responses these threads provoke though, I can almost see the spittle spraying over their keyboards as they strive to find words to vilify you . :D Cheers Billy 8-{) :xmouth: PS The words "proof read before posting" come to mind as useful advice to include if you feel like straying down this path again . |

This is the part I struggle with . It seems a lot of people just don't know the simple rules I explained, and I feel perhaps informing them of said rules may help them . I do enjoy the responses these threads provoke though, I can almost see the spittle spraying over their keyboards as they strive to find words to vilify you . :D I also enjoy the responses . This was supposed to be a trolling post, it seems I achieved my goal . PS The words "proof read before posting" come to mind as useful advice to include if you feel like straying down this path again . Please, let me know where I went wrong, I can't for the life of me find my mistake . Perhaps it's something I don't know I've done wrong, in which case I'd be very appreciative if you would be so kind as to point it out for me . |

| 551023 | 2007-05-20 11:44:00 | In light of recent posts I deem this thread necessary. If you disagree, have a cry or do whatever makes you feel better, or just don't read it. They're means "they are" Their is possessive. There means a place. They're driving their car over there. Your is possessive. You're means "you are" You're your only friend. It's means "it is" or "it has" only. For the rules on using the apostrophe, see Bob the Angry Flower's Quick Guide to the Apostrophe, You Idiots. (www.imagef1.net.nz) (39 KB) Would of is WRONG. It's "would have" The same applies to could, should, etc. That is all. I personally I just type what I am thinking, rather than actively trying to type grammatical sentences, and without any spelling errors. I also don't bother to check what I have written, as it is acceptable for a forum post to have errors in it. However I know where roddyboy is coming from, as some posters do have really shocking and blatantly bad grammar, which does often annoy me, and sometimes I have to refrain myself from correcting them. |

The rset can be a tatol mses and you can stlil read it wtiohut pborlem. This is beuacse we do not raed eevry lteetr by it slef but the word as a wohle. |

| 551025 | 2007-05-20 13:29:00 | I disagree with the above. It's far easier to read a normal sentence than that one. | roddy_boy (4115) | ||
| 551026 | 2007-05-20 13:49:00 | I tend to just ignore a thread where the poster has used txt speak or excessively poor grammar . I have no problems with accidental mis-spelling (as I am one of the worst in that area) . If the poster cannot take the time to punctuate and present a problem in a reasonably literate manner, what is the point in providing help when it may require a Run command or similar, unless they can provide the computer with the exact syntax and spelling for the command it will not work . If they can do that for the computer, why not at least try on the forum . This forum appears overly "PC" about commenting on grammar compared to other forums that I use . It is quite acceptable in others to ask the poster to resubmit their post in a manner that is better understood whereas here it appears to be a cardinal sin and turns into a flame war? |
