2007-05-21 04:53:00 | Just talking to one of our local TV installers today and in our region (Nelson), there's an estimate that Sky will lose up to 30% of it's subscribers. Due to the fact that we have poor reception here and have Sky mainly for the main stream channels. Yeah.....I've off loaded my Sky shares.

2007-05-21 05:02:00 | Hi my name is trinity4life and I'm new to this forum. I would like to know if you know anything about the function of a computer. My computer is not functioning. When I hit the on/off switch it comes on, the monitor comes on then it goes right back off, and then I hit the switch to turn the computer off and it continues to stay on. I must unplug the whole system in order for it to go off. A co-worker says it could be the video card. Could you shine some light on this situation please. Thanks, Helen

2007-05-21 06:43:00 | Looks like the battle of sky tv and freeview is heating up over the use of skys dish. On ringing several satellite installers this morning most of them have told me i would have to get a second dish on my roof because sky are stopping freeview customers from using their dish. Also as yet sky haven't switched to horizontal polarisation yet which is supposed to be happening on may 26th, even if this does happen all of the installers have said you will still get some freeview channels if you have sky but after a while you decoder will freeze up and you wont see anything. This will continue to happen until you get another dish installed despite the fact they both use the same spot beam, sky are altering the frequency to make it harder for you to use their dish if you are a sky customer wanting to also get freeview. One of the installers told me over the phone that as of this morning freeview have announced that their new news channel and home channel will be digitally encrypted so sky cant muck about with those channels. Oh what a wicked world we live in when it comes to sharing. :stare:  Of course installers will tell you to install a 2nd dish, more money for them this way. But nothing to stop you from plugging a freeview unit into your existing sky dish. Sky can't tell. As for Sky switching over May 26th there is nothing official about that as yet.. AS for new channels being encrypted on Freeview that comes from some b.s the Herald wrote and later retracted.

2007-05-21 07:20:00 | A few points that seem to be misunderstood above. Freeview and Sky have different polarity (V and H) but the LNB on the dish switches polarity depending on the signal from the set-top box. This is why you cannot share the dish, the set top boxes cannot be in parallel and when in series the one that has the direct connection would set the dish polarity. I have just put in a dish at a remote location, getting the dish aligned is not easy. The focus is exceedingly narrow, you really do need a "satellite finder" (signal strength meter) in the line. Also there are several satellites but only one that will be recognised, so its also a matter of locking onto the right one. If the vendors think Freeview is a home handymans DIY project, times will be interesting! Also the azimuth of the LNB is critical, a few degrees in one direction it favours Maori TV and C4, the other way is TV One and Sports special. In the middle is a compromise. V8 racing on One Sport special was good over the weekend.

2007-05-21 07:35:00 | We have been using free to air with a sat. dish & top box for the last 6 months, we set up the dish most nights in about 1 minute, it isn't that difficult. Most MotorHome owners do the same no matter where they are parked in NZ.
