551556 2007-05-21 21:02:00 So what's coming out in July again?Peryn Extreme Edition. Which is only for the rich, so just forget about it, if you want that CPU it's better to get some DDR III RAM too not DDR II anymore. PedalSlammer (8511)
551557 2007-05-21 22:34:00 "Bang for buck" is immaterial.
You should buy the cpu that meets your needs.
Wrong J. It's a matter of budgeting. My existing setup already meets my work needs. What I want to achieve is to find the best compromise between what I'd like to have versus what I'd like to use it for versus how much cash I need to lay out. It's a delicate compromise and the best way I've achieved this in the past is to buy hardware that falls within the sweet spot of any product range.

Needless to say some of us don't have unlimited cashflow, or can't justify endless expenditure on our hobbies or games .

DDR3 hasnt shown any improvement against DDR2, so why pay for more expensive RAM?

The cool thing is that Intel tweaked the hell outta the memory controller in the new P35 chipset, so when you compare DDR2 performance with the P35 and the P965 the P35 actually outperforms the 965 by 5-10%. This is generally something that doesn't happen with new generation chipset using the same type of memory.

Greg consider a different motherboard and possibly chipset, I can never find a reason to justify an Intel branded board. They use to offer superior stability but thats not the case anymore.

The only reason to buy the 975 over the 965 is if you intend to run crossfire as the PEG slots both run at 8x where as the 965 runs one at 16x and one at 4x crippling performance. If you noting running a multi-GPU setup consider 965 based Gigabyte or ASUS board.

Its rumored/generally excepted that Intel will drop the price of its current processors. Nothing special its happens every few months, but of late the drops have been more substantial as AMD has slashed its prices to offer a better price/performance ratio.

Intel is releasing a refreshed Conroe core called Peryn in the 3rd quarter of this year but it shouldn't bring any huge performance gains. Peryn is to Conroe as Northwood was to Willemette. The likely increases in performance are more likely to come from increases in clock speed as Peryn will be manufactured on a 45nm process and should be capable of higher clock speeds.

I agree, I have found most modern Intel boards to be terrible . The last one I bought (a P965) had an awful BIOS, awful layout (a big video card completely smothers the south bridge), and REALLY awful fan speed control . It has non-disablable fan control designed to keep the system quiet, but it doesn't even begin to speed any fans above their minimum speed (around 1100rpm out of 4000ish) until the temperature of the CPU is over 75 degrees .

Anyway, ranting aside, I tend to get Asus or Gigabyte boards . Not all nice Asus MBs are expensive too .

551562 2007-05-22 10:37:00 I have seen around the net that you can't overclock with Intel boards. Is that true? I was planning to get a DG965WHMKR..... qazwsxokmijn (102)

However, this has nothing to do with the DDR3 RAM, so as I said, no improvement, the chipset yes, but RAM no . . .

Traditionally this has been very true although a few of there boards have shown some solid overclocks. But honestly theres no reason to buy an Intel board! There are cheaper, better performing more feature rich boards to be had.

The P965 got solid performance in overclocking, but improved version of P965(P35) have better performance gained. PedalSlammer (8511)
