2007-05-21 00:42:00 | Because not everyone wants to speak for themselves (or feels comfortable with doing so in an open forum) on a subject that sensitive . Just because you don't know about them doesn't mean they're not there . Often people in that situation have enough to cope with already - don't add to it . Looks like that survey person came to the right site huh? :p This site is a very large family with all sorts of people in it who have many troubles and concerns . . the 'POLITICALLY CORRECT THING' to do is ignore them? I think not! If anyone recognizes themselves in my sarcasm, then so be it . . . but at least they know there are people who by sheer numbers of situations are not very much unlike themselves . Try to think of it this way: You'll realize that except for some conscious traits that we learn (nurture) and the DNA that we possess (nature) we are all pretty much the same while at the same time achieving autonomy . The little psychosis and mental gymnastics we all meet and greet every day make us the WHO we are . . . . and for better or worse, we should all bring these things into the daylight . We are gregarious persons (that means we like to be around other people) and as sure as they make different shades of red for paint, we should all celebrate our differences while living in the human herd, as it were . So . . Politically correct is BAH! That's just a term that allows us to NOT EMOTE for those of us who really need a good hug . Beetle . . where are you when I want support here? . . . and thanks for the positive comments . . . . :cool:

I think not!I wasn't suggesting ignoring the subject, nor do I have any issue with the original poster. However on this particular subject I think the jokes are better left unposted. |

2007-05-21 02:04:00 | Who? Why not name names if you think Joe's comment was so hurtful???? or at least let them speak for themselves if they're not just in your imagination.Been there, done that, have the scars to prove it, and i would be an exception is so much as i will freely admit it with neither shame or pride. For me it's just another chapter in the book that makes me the "interesting character" i am today. But i'm old enough to look back and call it part of my colorful history. I have a very colorful history :p For most it will be part of a very vulnerable stage of their lives and the chances of wanting to chat on an open forum such as this, or be the target of humor are somewhat low. I therefore can see bletches point. However, bringing things out in the open is a good thing too. It's hard to deal with hidden issues of any nature. Perhaps it's to that end that the original post was made?

2007-05-21 02:48:00 | I think if you're looking for sado-masochists, you'll fill your quota easily....people who actually draw blood on themselves are screened and dismissed at the registration desk. Watch it please. Don't discount those that do it because they feel they dont have any other way to cope. There are those that do it for attention, but some dont. Who? Why not name names if you think Joe's comment was so hurtful???? or at least let them speak for themselves if they're not just in your imagination. Let this be me speaking for myself. Been there, done that, have the scars to prove it, and i would be an exception is so much as i will freely admit it with neither shame or pride. For me it's just another chapter in the book that makes me the "interesting character" i am today. But i'm old enough to look back and call it part of my colorful history. Perhaps it's to that end that the original post was made? Indeeed it is, it takes someone like jerrado (who i know personally) to post in an open forum like that. We knew (yes im helping with the project) that we would get some unkind response, but we hoped that it wouldn't happen. Apparently we were 100% correct. And ignoring them (as SJ said) is also the wrong thing to do. Something like this might give the entire issue the publicity it needs.

2007-05-21 02:50:00 | Posting from a school classroom, between a class, so haven't got time to say much I think Dannz covered most of what i think, with the addition that i also am one of those people, so here is me speaking out. Please don't joke about this subject, it is quite a sensitive subject, and your comments will be taken personally by some people.

2007-05-21 05:16:00 | From the "More Lists" post that is currently running on the same side of this forum, I present #14: 14. No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously.

2007-05-21 05:30:00 | You saying we are taking all this too seriously? | jerrado (12180) | |
2007-05-21 06:30:00 | No . . I am saying that this is not the correct place to air this theory and junior psychologist experiment . People with hangups and psychosis have much more to worry about than maintaining a cheerful facade and disposition . If finding anecdotal support is all they want, then maybe bringing this situation out into the open is a good thing . I refuse however, to allow people who don't have these sorts of problems becoming a whipping boy for every perceived ill a person might have . Anyone who delves into the mind and the causes/conditions and tries to use a public forum for this "experiment" in do-goodism is just asking for abuse and ribald innuendo . I suggest that as a service to those who really need help that they consult a REAL doctor who has the correct training and responses to their problems and leave the peer-acceptance and those self-enabling psycho babelists out of their circle of "friends" . Tremendous amounts of non qualified assistance just makes it harder to present a decent cure, if that be the word, for people with this problem of self destruction . Asking for and telling fireside stories of how things worked out for you and your friends is not good medicine . That's a social gathering that may be more suited to talking about the latest movies, fashion or the 2008 model cars .

2007-05-21 06:44:00 | Great point there SJ... But you missed ours. The aim of the research project is to Promote understanding & stop the misconceptions this isnt a support group. Its about getting information to people, so they understand. Nothing More.
jerrado (12180) | ||
2007-05-21 07:19:00 | Just to play the devil's advocate here for a moment: What if people become depressed over your "research project" and commit suicide because they never knew how bad the world is? A little extreeeeeme, but not to be totally discounted . There are people with the "Pollyanna" syndrome who never even think about such things as "Bad News", Death and disfigurement" or "Negative self-realization" . How're you gonna protect them your airing this little experiment? It takes a village idiot mentality to not see that SOMEONE IS OFFENDED BY THE VERY EXISTENCE OF CERTAIN CONDITIONS" and you cannot do anything about it . Sometimes mockery and derision are the ways people handle these disabilities . Not fair, but it's the truth . Denial in the form of humor is a safety valve for those people . If you want those of us who may chide you and your attempt for a merit badge in some secondary school to embrace your project, then you also have to be as politically correct as you desire of me . If you want to talk about festering pustules and form a support group, then let's go for it as I am not offended . . . but that's just MY take on a subject to which I can communicate without revulsion . I am not without compassion for people so estranged from reality, it's just that there is too much emphasis on the "rights" of minorities and "wrongs" of the majority . Not being a majority player myself, I can commiserate with your situation, but I don't think much if any good will come from turning a technical site as F1 is into a forum for the use of "social enlightenment of and for self abuse", no matter in what form it exists . Past religious discussions on F1 that went on until people got their noses bloodied are evidence enough that these things are sometimes better off left off camera .
