2007-05-19 08:28:00 | People will climb on any high horse they can, Makes em feel superior, Its a weak past time, and the grammar high horse is the weakest of them all. Plus its arrogant to claim that your version of a totally fluid system is the one true version.

2007-05-19 08:32:00 | On the radio this morning a woman author (ie an "authoress" :) ) who had written a book about the South Pacific and its cultures, rabbiting on about culcha. If people talk like this then eventually they are going to spell as they talk, so 'would have' becomes 'would've' becomes 'would of' and so on. They then cannot see what is wrong. Honestly, Who the hell do you think you are taking a serve at her? Little jealous that shes a published author yet you claim a higher standard of the English language? Heart breaking. Im sure we can all see which effort deserves the more respect.

2007-05-19 08:44:00 | How about you show the lady some respect for her work rather then being an egg about her use of her language, Its so incredibly tiny minded. | Metla (12) | |
2007-05-19 11:46:00 | Roddy should realise that criticism of spelling and bad grammar (on this forum) is a waste of time, laudable though the aim may be. These subjects do not appear to be taught in schools these days, or, if they are , then not very effectively, and it appears to be bad form for teachers to attempt correction. We have the spectacle of the NZQA condoning the use of 'txt' language in certain circumstances in exams: tvnz.co.nz On the radio this morning a woman author (ie an "authoress" :) ) who had written a book about the South Pacific and its cultures, rabbiting on about culcha. If people talk like this then eventually they are going to spell as they talk, so 'would have' becomes 'would've' becomes 'would of' and so on. They then cannot see what is wrong.<sigh>It all started to go downhill when Latin ceased to be a compulsory subject in school. Although some people insist that Latin is a dead language, a very high proportion of the words they actually utter have their roots in Latin. Plus Latin (like German and other Romance languages) have a very strong grammatical structure, which flowed into English. Unfortunately, the powers that be decided that Latin (and other languages like it) were less suited to the hoy polloy, so it was quietly dropped.</sigh>

2007-05-19 13:01:00 | It seems to me we have been through all this umpteen times before over the years, with the same sort of response from the "resident champion" of the illiterates :) Good posts Terry, but it just goes over some peoples heads . Some good tips here from Geekzone . co . nz for their users which we all can take note of . Here are a few tips to make your entries read well: Spelling and good grammar Yes, they're boring and get in the way of writing as you think, but spelling and grammar have a place . A post with bad spelling and grammar, rotten punctuation and no capitalisation isn't fun for others to read . If spelling and grammar arent your strong points, try using a word processor with a spelling checker to weed out the errors . Format Make sure you separate paragraphs with a couple of line breaks, because this will make it easier for visitors to your blog to read the content . Also keep the font usage consistent, avoiding different fonts and sizes in the same post and not using many colours . Language choice You want to come across as a sentient, intelligent being with something important to say . Trust me on this . Therefore, you need to make sure the language in your blog posts reflects this . Avoid l33tsp33k, SMS abbreviations, excessive punctuation marks like !!!!, swear words, and so forth unless of course you want to make a point of using such "linguistic features" . It's still hard to read long articles on the screen, so try to break up what you write in short sentences and paragraphs . Doing so helps readers a lot . Bullet points can be very effective as well, for getting your point across fast .

2007-05-19 14:32:00 | In light of recent posts I deem this thread necessary. If you disagree, have a cry or do whatever makes you feel better, or just don't read it. They're means "they are" Their is possessive. There means a place. They're driving their car over there. Your is possessive. You're means "you are" You're your only friend. It's means "it is" or "it has" only. For the rules on using the apostrophe, see Bob the Angry Flower's Quick Guide to the Apostrophe, You Idiots. (www.imagef1.net.nz) (39 KB) Would of is WRONG. It's "would have" The same applies to could, should, etc. That is all. I applaud you. It sometimes irritates me when people blatantly make those common mistakes.
