Microsoft Corp. today confirmed that it will sell what it calls "upgrades" for Windows 7 to users running the aged Windows XP operating system.

Those users, however will have to do a "clean" installation of Windows 7, meaning that all data on the machine will be lost.

"Regarding XP, customers can purchase upgrade media and an upgrade license to move from Windows XP to Windows 7," a company spokeswoman said in an e-mail this morning. "However, they will need to do a clean installation of Windows 7."

They really don't want to do the job properly do they? Thousands of XP users will never upgradeunder these conditions.

744713 2009-02-04 00:08:00 Its a well know fact that doing an upgrade to an OS from one version to another is always a bit doggy.
If the original OS is not sound in its operation, upgrading wont make it any better.

A fresh install is always better.

744714 2009-02-04 00:16:00 Good on MS.

As Wainui said, a fresh install is always much better than an upgrade. Will be interesting to see what the pricing is like.

744717 2009-02-04 02:57:00 I Was reading This article (www.mydigitallife.info) the other day - W7 May be Free to Vista Users, but as per normal theres a catch.:p wainuitech (129)
744718 2009-02-04 06:48:00 That sucks Wainuitech, those of us that actually liked Vista get screwed over cause we actually spent money to upgrade too it ourselves DeSade (984)
744719 2009-02-04 08:09:00 Microsoft did the same thing with Vista and 2000 - you can upgrade from 2000 to Vista, but you have to do a clean install. pcuser42 (130)
744720 2009-02-04 08:19:00 The stupid thing is that there won't be many XP machines that can handle the specs of 7 especially when it comes to the graphics requirements.

You are better to clean install from vista or buy/build a 7 capable machine

No person is forcing anyone to upgrade or downgrade in any event.
I do note after having read the article it seems to be full of the word "may"

This is different to the word "will"

My hardware handles Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Only a AMD 4400+ and 4 Gig RAM

I was able to install a Beta version of Windows 7 and all hardware worked.

If your current system uses Vista then be happy or upgrade. Be happy with the price or not.

I will go buy Win7 when released.
