744350 2009-02-03 02:21:00 Minds gone blank - been a while since I've had to work with networked Win2000

Ok got about 20 PC's All windows 2000 Pro on a LAN, NO SERVER, they all have Internet access Via a router/Switches. (currently locked in a cupboard that no one has the key for :groan:)

1st Problem - the LAN printer is showing in the Printer folder - BUT the way the previous IT guy set them up, you can see the printer, but not allowed to print to it in any way shape or form, if you try it simply says words to the effect "access is blocked to allow printing"

Now the question: :help: Apart from going into the following paths:

From admin tools ----

Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates / Printers Folder

OR

Local Computer Policy/User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Control Panel/ Printers

Then in the printers folder all the various options ----

Is there any other places the setting may be changed to block the printers?

I've quickly checked the setting on the printer properties while sussing the job today, to do tomorrow and nothing is blocked there

Once I find out where 1 is blocked the rest will be easy.

2nd problem ( not really) the original IT guy left in a huff - moved to china - no one knows the Admin Passwords- easy enough to break/reset. :nerd:

744351 2009-02-03 02:28:00 Is the printer set to the right port etc? Blam (54)
744352 2009-02-03 02:35:00 All 20 odd PC's are set right on the TCPIP port with the IP address (I checked 3 and all the same) Its a network printer - they are simply blocked by a setting someplace, just trying to narrow down where to look - The policy editor, being Win2000 is where i would expect it to be blocked - no point in looking in the policy editor if its blocked some other place.

Edit: you can ping the Printer but thats about it.

744353 2009-02-03 02:55:00 Have you tried uninstall, then reinstall the printer on one machine.I know it will be a pain if you got to do all 20. plod (107)
744354 2009-02-03 02:56:00 im assuming its a little unit plugged into the printer it may have a reset switch that you can hold down when you power it up. the printer's config might have screwed up or has a curfew time set williamF (115)
744355 2009-02-03 03:12:00 Good suggestion Will, I will have a look to see if theres anything there - one thing I did forget to mention, they have another Two PC's in the reception area, which are also connected to the same LAN Printer and theses print with no problems.

Its simply a matter of finding what is set to block the other PC's - didn't have my password cracking software with me today to get into the Admin Account, the User accounts are locked down tight - you know the story - go to do a simple job, OH and while your here ------

Plod- from what I'm told they tried to delete the printer, but it wouldn't allow it - I know where the policy setting is to change that - Just hoping the Block is in the same area.

Apparently they used to print OK but the last IT guy put a block in to save paper, its a community set of PC's and the kids print off all sorts of guff.

Just open to suggestions as to other places it could be blocking apart from the policy settings. Hopefully after resetting the admin password, looking the policy editor and go - GOT YA!

744356 2009-02-03 03:20:00 IT guys who up and leave cause all kinds of problems eh!

I'm going through the same thing at the moment, very annoying. Involves exchange and a domain, all of which has been set up in a queer manner. Now SBS 2003 refuses to set up a mailbox or email alias for any new user that's created.

Meh.

Good luck anyway, hope you get it sorted double quick!

:groan:

744357 2009-02-03 03:29:00 Hopefully I will Wratt - just seeing if there was any other ideas as to where the printers may be blocked - wont know till I blow the Admin passwords, and have a good look.

Mind you it may open a can of worms as well - Hmmmm Worms :)

744358 2009-02-03 04:05:00 The printer itself doesn't have any user rights access settings?
Have you tried putting the printer IP into a web browser to see what comes up?

744359 2009-02-03 04:18:00 Good Point CYaBro - I'll check that as well.

Haven't actually "got my hands dirty' yet as the saying goes, as all the PC's are on strict user accounts, and no one knows the Admin Passwords to allow changing, wasn't exactly expecting this job when I went in earlier today - I was only going in to do another "quickie" in another part of the building, when I got cornered with "while you're here" --
